General Discussion Area / Re: Kentucky plane crash
« on: 10 November 2025, 15:27:31 »
The MD11 is a turd of an aircraft, just like the DC10 it's based on. It is a decent size aircraft and can carry a fair amount of weight, so makes a good freighter. Doesn't have a particularly good safety record though.

I think that is an understatement :o :o

I remember the one crash in Northern France, that we amazingly heard the sound of on the beach in Hastings!!  A cargo door came off with that one, and I have just looked up the crash record of the DC10, which confirms that door was the cause of many crashed ........55 in total!! :o :o
To quote Goggle  - "The DC-10 has been involved in 55 accidents and incidents, including 32 hull-loss accidents, with 1,261 fatalities. Some sources provide slightly different numbers, such as 29 crashes and over 1,000 deaths, but the overall statistics indicate a high number of accidents for this aircraft"

Wow!!  I knew the record was bad, but that is staggering.  I just remember having to fly on a Lockheed 10/11 Tristar in 1998 across the USA, and although a completely different aircraft and manufacturer than the DC10, was nervous about doing so for some reason!  My mind could not help remembering the record of the latter! ::) ::) ::)

I have just also researched the Northern France crash of 1974, and once more Google states:
"The DC-10 crash in northern France refers to Turkish Airlines Flight 981, which crashed on March 3, 1974, in the Ermenonville Forest, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) northeast of Paris. All 346 people on board were killed, making it the deadliest single-aircraft accident without survivors in aviation history.
The cause of the crash was the in-flight ejection of the rear cargo door due to a design flaw that allowed the door to appear fully locked when it was not. The resulting explosive decompression caused the cabin floor to collapse and severed the control cables necessary to fly the aircraft, leading to a complete loss of control"

That day I remember so well due to that sound and the news we picked up later on the car radio! :o :o

Afternoon all,

My NCDC 2013 wont store the date, I've managed to get the time roughly correct, however the date still thinks its some date in 2006.

I've read elsewhere its an issue with the NCDC unit itself rather than the colour display.

I have tried to see if there is a way of telling it the date in "My Naff Code Reader", however no such luck.

Anyone know of a way to correct this?

My NCDC 2013 is exactly the same, no matter what I do to change from a date in 2006.  I have repeatedly gone through the manual process, but still the same.  Radio 2 changed the time automatically, but never that 2006 date!  Now I just live with it. :D ;)

.....and you could argue that Starmer is similar to Chamberlain.

Weak and pathetic. :)

Probably only a matter of time before he waves a piece of paper in the air. ::)

That Opti is known to have been the outward appearance, yes.  However, we know from the private papers of the time, versified by some historians, that Chamberlain was very uneasy about that "Peace in our time", as he made known on his arrival back at No. 10 Downing Street.  He was no fool and knew that Hitler was very devious and hell bent on war and pushing countries such as Britain and France to see how far he could take it,  just as Putin is now.  Chamberlain knew in 1938 that Great Britain was in no fit state to fight a major conflict as, like the rest of Europe, it had been demilitarising after the terrible blood letting of The Great War, contrary to what Hitler's Germany had been doing.  He knew if Germany tried to attack they would undoubtedly win.  He needed more time for Britain at least to prepare for a major conflict and re-invigorate it's industry to produce arms in bulk.  Once again, just like now in 2025.  The Munich Agreement bought Britain that precious time.  The British Government had already significantly increased war production from 1933-34 (post Hitler rising to power in 1933), but then substantially increasing it again with high level naval construction, then the ramped up production of the Hurricane and Spitfire RAF fighters from 1937-38 (the year of Munich and that "white sheet of paper" nonsense.

In short, Chamberlain knew in 1938 war was definitely coming, bought time for Great Britain, that of course Churchill benefited from in 1940 when he became PM.  That year the RAF with it's brave fighter pilots held off magnificently the Luftwaffe and degraded them, so by 15th September, the Germans were no longer confident that they could secure a victory and protect a German military invasion.  Operation Sea Lion was called off.  If The Munich Agreement and Chamberlain had not delayed what would be the start of WW2 as he did, it can be strongly argued Britain would have been over run by Hitler, just as the rest of Europe was.

Chamberlain was an old fashioned "Gentleman",  but no fool. ;)

I must agree!  But preferably ones with chimneys, coal, water and the lovely smell of hot oil mixed with steam...................what a lovely, gorgeous memory I have of hot pacific loco's, alongside a Standard 4, and a Mansell U class, sitting in the yard! :-* :-* :-*

Mind you, my ex and I built a great OO gauge multi-line layout, with 22 loco's and about 100 coaches and wagons around our  ex-garage with model engine shed and houses, for our boys, so I can readily identify with this thread Tunnie :y :y :y.

A really great hobby when you cannot get out and go on the footplate of a real steam loco!! ;D ;D ;)

I am not nearly affluent enough to be dabbling in external combustion engines (and I wouldn't as they are a bit to simple and dull from an engineering perspective for me), with massive six figure sums needing to be spent every ten years and loads of work in the interim.  :o

A friend has an Austerity, which he is just doing his fourth overhaul on, by his calcs, he could have bought a couple of extra houses with the cash spent and his is only a small one!  ;D

Oh yes, they ARE very expensive to keep going!  To think the Barry engines were bought for a few grand, but then had people like my ex and me working for free rubbing them down and slapping on the paint!  Oh, happy days ;D ;D ;D

That is one lovely car, and will be worth every penny to the new owner :-* :-* :y :y

I had brand new company Carlton's back in the day, but I always fancied one of those beasts! :D :D

Just 29K on the clock;  it is almost brand new! ;D ;D :)

Mine is just going up and up!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

Mileage is only 87K, and the maintenance is fully up to date.  It certainly is not deprecating, and worth the money I have spent! :D ;)

Starmer has issued Israel with an ultimatum that if they do not make peace with Hamas by September, then Britain will recognise Palestine as a state.

He said the Israeli government must make substantive steps to end the appalling situation in Gaza, agree to a ceasefire and commit to a long-term sustainable peace, allow the UN to restart the supply of aid and make clear there will be no annexations in the West Bank.

To Hamas he said that they must immediately release all of the hostages, sign up to a ceasefire, disarm and accept that they will play no part in the government of Gaza. However there are no consequences for Hamas if they do not comply with his demands!  ::)

This is quite extraordinary, coming just a few days after Steve Witkoff the US Envoy confirmed that the reason peace talks broke down recently were because Hamas weren't interested, and I suspect the announcement is as much timed and designed for domestic politics as international.  :-X

You have just stated what the consequences are.  They will lose their power, and elicit income, and be reduced to nothing, after losing so much already.

It is all politics in a situation that has been really there for centuries, and certainly since the 20th century post the Ottoman Empire, and cost so much.  This move is hoped to settle the hopeless plight of Palestinians, release the hostages (IF still alive), and bring the Israelite’s to heel from creating a very large extension to their domain, which is what they have been trying to do in Gaza, which even a former Israeli Prime Minister has condemned, and is against International Law. ;)

But, this is all complex politics involving the dangerous Middle East, which MAY, JUST MAYBE, will be all settled and peaceful one (distant?) day.  ::) ::) ::) :-X

In a nutshell, that’s exactly what should have and should be happening now. Otherwise why were the UN formed in the first place? The population needs to get a gorilla force together…. Eradicate these animal Hamas tossers and start afresh. There will never be a two state again and why should there be?

Agree about getting shot of Hamas, but after that there MUST be a Palestinian State.  Why not?  It is what the region needs and wants, being supported by the leaders of Europe and Middle East;  well, with the exception of Israel! ;)

And now, this afternoon whilst in Scotland, President Trump stated:
Donald Trump says there is "real starvation" in Gaza, and the US will set up food centres there

So what more proof do the doubters need?! ::) ::) ::)

This is an interesting article and appears to be well researched.

https://david-collier.com/the-truth-behind-the-viral-gaza-famine-photo/

So the numerous International charity and welfare organisations, plus international political leaders, let alone the numerous international doctors and medical staff have all been fooled have they?  There graphic accounts are all false are they?  I think not!  They have boots on the ground and have been witnesses to the war crimes being carried out.

And how about this:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/videos/cy8k8045nx9o

And this other view of wat's happening:
https://edition.cnn.com/world/live-news/israel-hamas-gaza-news-07-28-25

But, of course, The Times of Israel posted this:
https://www.timesofisrael.com/ex-us-contractor-says-he-saw-idf-commit-war-crimes-at-aid-sites-ghf-rejects-false-claims/

Just as Joseph Goebbels propaganda would have done! ::) ::) ::)

Even the Nazis once fooled everyone with the story that the concentration camps were looking after the inmates and protecting them;  the truth about that one eventually came out!

Thank God there are many honest Israelis prepared to speak out, and no less than a former Prime Minister of theirs:
https://edition.cnn.com/2025/05/28/middleeast/ehud-olmert-criticizes-gaza-war-oped-intl#:~:text=Former%20Israeli%20prime%20minister%20Ehud%20Olmert%20has%20blasted,to%20defend%20Israel%20against%20accusations%20of%20war%20crimes.

Yes, Hamas IS an evil organisation using the Palestinians as pawns in their game to  weaken the Israelis power in the region and annihilate them, as the Israeli's themselves have been "Nazis like" over their objectives of removing all Palestinians from Gaza, and everywhere else in the Middle East, which is an very old aim of them.

No, the truth is Genocide with the murder of innocent civilians IS taking place, whatever  a minority want to believe.  As said, even the Nazis got away with covering up their awful sins for some considerable time before the truth got out.

What is now needed is full UN / USA intervention to bring about a permanent ceasefire and the twin State proposed by many, although not Donald J. Trump!!  Then the victims in all this, the Palestine civilians who played no part in the terrible Oct 7th killing spree of Jews, can start to rebuild their lives and their homes.
