Thanks for all the comments.

Had a go at taking out the current cage, and it is about as tight as a Nats Chuff behind the unit.  Had a devil of a job just getting the Philips cage back in.  Had a few cuts on the old knuckles, but at least I can see what goes on in their and even with my small hands seems like a challenge.

I guess I weigh up paying Halfords the £28 over the cheapest supplier to cut their knuckles or do it free and treat the neighbourhood to a few choice cusses into the bargain.

Will let you know which way I go, but it's more of a time issue and keeping my missus happy (not mucking about with the car when I could be doing some DIY - or taking the kids up the park) ::)

I am thinking of fitting a SONY MEX BT2500 CD/MP3 player to a 97 Omega (probably more than the car is worth I know).

The question is whether the Sony will just fit into the current electrical fittings that the Phillips SC804 uses, or will I need to buy all sorts of adaptors.

if anyone has done this themselves let me know.

It's either buy the unit on Amazon for £90 or Halfords for £130 (with free fitting), so I would like to save the extra by going through Amazon if it is a straight swap.

Any comments appreciated.

Pete

Hello again - been off-line for a while

The last letter in the VIN is a V

If this means the box ECU is upgraded, what difference would it make

Had the box topped up and seems smooth, and having new gasket fitted on Monday, so hopefully its okay.

Checked the VIN

It ends in neither, but starts with a W and ends in 888

Oops, just poked my head under the car, damp gearbox, problem solved, well hopefully.  Just hope have not broken anything while running low on oil.

Off to garage first thing tomorrow.

Had fluid changed about 17K mile ago, so would think that is still fine.

Never heard of autobox software update - how is this done, and what does it do to performance.  I thought updates only worked (easily) with oilburners.

Omega General Help / Autobox - needs some TLC
« on: 24 September 2007, 10:34:35 »
Seems like reading the threads, that I have the dreaded 'Thrust Washer' autobox failure, box has done 159K in 10 years, and just started the 'thump' syndrome, and today vibration for the first time.

My questions

1. Should I stop driving immediately, or will it tolerate being used until I can get it to my friendly mechanic.

2. Roughly how many hours shoukd it take to do, I will give my garage the maintenance guide, which seems very clear.

3. If God forbid I need a new box - what is likely cost.

4. There are somewhere a recommended ATF, but cannot recall, so anyone know which is best.

Sorry for all the questions, but I also need a new set of Michelins and exhaust, so need to know if it is time to get a new Omega, or remain with current well loved machine.

Thanks in advance for advice.

I will ask that question when I take it to the garage.

I assume a qualified Vauxhall dealer would know this!

Omega General Help / Suffering from frequent front bush problem
« on: 21 August 2007, 10:52:17 »
A bit of history first.

4 years ago had a wishbone replaced as bushes had gone (I did drive with failed bushesfor quite some time - naughty I know, but at the time I thought it was just warped discs).

1 year ago (and about 15K later) had to have both wishbones replaced again as both bushes went (also my trusted mechanic said it looked like the previous garage had only replaced one wishbone - not the two they charged me for - as one looked new and one looked very much like the original).  After the second round of replacement, i had full back and front re-alginement and the old tank ran like a dream for a while.

Today been to ATS because of excessive wear on left, and they checked alignment and then showed me on the ramp that both front tyres had excessive movement, and suggested that the bushes may be gone again (this is after less than 15K miles).

I will be taking it back to my trusted mechanic to see if the bushes have gone, but am loathed to throw yet more money on a 10year old if there is a bigger problem here.

BUT my question is that if it is the bushes again, what the heck could be going on, is there something else that needs looking at to point to whether the problem lies elsewhere.
So that maybe I can get the garage to check out anything else on the front end.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Thought it was about time to join as having driven my 10 year old Omega for 6 years (previous was a Cavalier owner) would like to try and keep it going a while longer and this forum seems to be the place to check things out.

The thing about Omegas is that you can drive from Glos to Glasgow and back and feel as if you have sat in an armchair all the way.

Have driven Peugeots 406 (TDi great drive, uncomfortable seats), Vectra (darned painful to drive for more than 10 minutes), Honda Civic (robust engine, but more thirsty than my 2.5 petrol and with short wheelbase feels like it hops about on the road), BMW 330D, (grips like velcro, but like all German cars, I find the seat as a bit too firm), Saabs (comfortable but too small).

So if I have to give up my current Omega will no doubt go for another.

Will be posting a question as I need to decide whether to spend anymore on the current tank or dip out and get a replacement.
