Now Sir Keir has faced a similar issue, with successive previous government, including the Conservatives, severely cutting the Defence Budget and placing the UK in a "unready for war" state.  He now must somehow "make time" with the diminished military and he has already started the process to rebuild, after the previous Conservative Government did make a good decision; to build two full aircraft carriers.  They just need a full back up of supporting destroyers , and cruisers, let alone many more F35's. The trouble is, in the 21st century, developing and rebuilding the military takes significant time, which the issue of HMS Dragon highlights, in its own way, with time needed to build up stocks of munitions, and having no real back up to this specialist vessel.  The very issue that many European countries are now facing.  The Ukraine War has also dramatically shown, to all militaries, that the nature of warfare has changed and has led to a major review of how to conduct a modern fight for survival.

Aircraft carriers are from the 1970s. These days, they are just sitting ducks—as are most other surface ships. As for the F35s, they are inordinately expensive and are arguably inferior to other 5th gen aircraft available elsewhere.

Yes, modern warfare is has changed dramatically and is now dominated by such things as drones, hypersonic missiles (for which neither we, nor the US, currently have the technology), EMP weaponry and all sorts of advanced EW systems.

The days of battleships, lumbering tanks and ground armies will be consigned to history books—there is no place for them in future military confrontations.

Building up a sizeable defence force for the next century would be prohibitively expensive. With ex-service personnel currently living on the streets, it would be as obscenity to throw billions on committing to a larger military "for our survival". We are not under threat.

Far better to establish non-aggression treaties with as many countries as possible—but that involves diplomacy. The future for all of us on the planet depends on rational, honest and possibly even friendly, behaviour...not thinking that we know best how other countries ought to be ruled. What is that approach doing for the US?

And, these days, the UK is hardly a good example of a well-functioning democracy!

In part. If the best that our wet fag, I mean rag, of an excuse for a leader can muster is two facelifted Lynx and 4 Typhoons, then we may as well give up. ;(

We shouldn't be involved at all.
Iran is not our concern, same goes for Ukraine. "That wet rag" of which you speak, is a globalist and still thinks–wrongly—that the UK has place on the world stage. We don't and we should just accept that. No way should our armed forces be used to fight foreign wars that the general public do not support.

Former US Ambassador Chas Freeman says diplomacy, not war, is the way to conduct foreign policy. :y

What is it you actually do? Trawl the internet until you find some nobody to agree with you? Grow up, and face up to the real world, not the one you wish it was.

I listen to and watch real people who have knowledge and experience of the real world, unlike you.

Not petrol prices, but our heating oil has gone from around 58-60p  a litre for the last year or so, to around 120-150p a litre  now. :o :o :o :o

It's just crazy.

Who should I blame? ::)

The Mad Mullahs. Unfortunately this war has been a long time coming.  :-\

Try Netanyahu & Trump.

Anything Ed Miliband is involved with is bound to be bad. He has no sense or morality.  >:(

he has thus far done EVERYTHING he said he would...

Except, "no new wars"...  ::)
Which new war exactly?

Data from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) indicates US forces have executed or partnered in 622 air and drone strikes across seven countries in 2025. Oh and that's just 2025. Add Venezuela now.

Strategic strikes do not a war make. By comparison, how many have the UK and other NATO members been involved in?

I can think of at least five for the UK alone... Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Gaza and Ukraine.

One might argue that Venezuela is just another sub note in the "war on drugs" started by Reagan...

I agree that lobbing bombs does not constitute a war, per se, but it's a moot point. Once civilians die as a result of such bombs, it might just as well be called a war.

Also, for Venezuela, it's nothing to do with drugs. Most of the Fentanyl gets to the US from Mexico. Venezuela does not supply – though it may be argued that some drug transit takes place. Either way, the "narco-terrorist" claims are red herrings. The war-hawks need a story, even if it doesn't stand up to any meaningful scrutiny.
In the same way that the first Gulf War wasn't actually about the sovereignty of Kuwait. ;)

Exactly. And what about all those WMDs? ;)

It would constitute a moral issue if the present occupants didn't want to transfer control. Ask any Ukrainian.
Transfer of control......funny way to describe an invasion.
[/quote]

There are plenty of Russian-speaking Ukrainians who would welcome a transfer of control. Especially those Orthodox Christians who have been banned from their Church or want to speak in their mother tongue and have their children likewise educated. Also relatives of the 16000 killed by the Ukrainian bombs, or who died when that building in Odessa was torched. Remember that Zelensky's presidential manifesto was good relations with Russia. Funny how he forgot that when he was elected.

As far as Trump is concerned, he seems to take fun in ignoring the US Constitution.

...and Greenland was discovered by Denmark before the US even existed!

Am I alone in disliking the way US fads are adopted over here?

Maybe I am too traditional, but I like the old ways — like Boxing Day sales and the like. But WTF is Black Friday in our British culture? Does anyone know?

My email inbox is jammed full of Black Friday offers. Grrrr!
