putting all the above to one side for the moment
i cannot underdtand how 2 rubber booted shocks can have a light misting of oil anyway ?  i would have thought the only way oil could leak out of those would be a holed body in ehich case they surrly should be a definate fail so i suspect theres nothing actually wtong with your shocks at all ???

yep self levelling indeed so if thd vx garage can keep ti their price you will indeed get a bargain but they wont !
so its as suggested ealier
2options
find the correct shocks and make sure the system is working or
convert springs and shocks to normal style (dont know if this would be classed as a modification to the vehicle thou ??

basically if the shocks have a large rubber bellow covering the centre section rather than a simple tube over tube look then they are indeed SL shocks but it cannot see how SL shocks could have a light misting of oil (ie a leak ?)all over them as where would the oil come from unless the rubber is perished or the actual body has a pinhole .

i have to agree with some of the above comments yes .
if the car has been modified over the years to non self levelling then yes fitting a pair of normal standard shocks and cleaning /greasing the brake pipes would be doable at that quoted price (if not a little expensive ?)
BUT as said if your still on the factory self levelling system then id be asking what they are actually going to do ??
but aside all that -what and why are the shocks an advisory anyway .had they thought they seemed a little soft whilst maybee dropping into the brake test rollers ? or what .they dont do the corner bounce check anymore and you wouldnt spot a leaking shaft seal because of the air boot ???
marking brake pipes as "covered in grease or other material " is pretty standard anyway unless obviously  rusty !

you only need to press the brake slightly until the solenoid releases .you MAY loose a bit of brake fluid but minimal ((alternately use the yellow lever as you mentioned)

cd spec will still have alarm fitted and unlocking the drivers door with key can trigger it hence hazards but horn should still sound (the alarm horn up in the corner of the scuttle )

others may be along to give a more presise answwer but to me it sounds like there may be an issue with the drivers door solenoid (causing the unlocking)and maybee the alarm horn is faulty .the one next to where the powersounder lived (the hazards suggest the alarm is goin off but no noise)

nothing obviously faulty standing out so i swapped the main 40 pin up chip.a heat gun with a shroud managed this ok .fault still remained so added a "reset' button to wake up the processor when it faults .this works every time it fails to power on so i can live with this .
put the reset button on the facia to short the control pin to gnd .works great and looks factory too !
so all problems solved realy .thanks to all for helping . cheers.

Omega General Help / Re: Thermostat transfir pipe
« on: 10 January 2026, 17:06:04 »
its because the removeable part of the thermostat is only half of the sealing valve .the other half is the alumunium housing which can become worn and pitted hence leaky !( this is the usual failure mode anyway - letting water past )

yes i usually carry on until i find the problem .just didnt expect this to take a few years !. i couldnt have done it thou without mr lco112g whom ive probably srcewed up his head over this !
however ive learned a lot from him and im now going to have another go at thd original thread issue .(not turing on some of the time !)
i bought two units this month and added the pull up resistor to both of them as they didnt sound perfect in the cold bug now do .one of them however only turns on 9 times out of ten so im ready to bore you all on this issue  now !!!!!!!

Omega General Help / Re: SKF Cambelt kits ?
« on: 03 January 2026, 11:46:08 »
the "fits all models" is true to a point . on the later ones you can still fit an adjustable lower pulley if you want and obviously fit the new stuff to your original top assembly (never sure why you got a new assembly anyway ? were they prone to failure ?)
only thing im not sure of is i dont know if a later lower fixed pulley would work on an earlier car ?
you could also swap pulley centre bores if needs be !
i bought (like many on here) a few of the delco kits that were around a few years ago for £25 each.
