Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Radio display gone walkies
« on: 13 June 2011, 14:43:55 »
Got a 2002 2.6 CDX with the 2006 radio/cd fitted as standard.  The radio display has suddenly decided to stop working.  I don't think its a pixel problem as the date shows correctly when the radio is switched off.  Anybody got any ideas please?

Omega General Help / Car flooded - a cautionary tale
« on: 24 July 2011, 18:50:38 »
Car parked in the driveway during 3 days of (very) heavy rain.  When I came to use it I saw that I had about 3 inches of water sloshing about in the rear nearside footwell.  It turned out that the drainage pipe in front of the heater intake in the engine bay was blocked and the intake had about 5 inches of water in it.  I know it's not the easiest place to check, but be aware it can happen - although how all the gunge got down there is beyond me,

Omega General Help / Rear bearing noise (??) - 2002 CDX 2.6
« on: 17 May 2011, 14:19:53 »
Have a slight constant rumble noise from the rear end which seems to increase in volume and pitch on the overrun.  Local garage checked wheel & half-shaft bearings and said they were OK.  They suggested that I change the rear tyres which while legal were pretty worn.  New tyres fitted, but no difference.  Could it be the diff, and if so are there any oil additives I could use - obviously reluctant to shell out for a new unit. Also have a broken rear nearside spring so getting both sides replaced tomorrow, but I don't think that would be responsible for the noise.

Omega General Help / Cambelt change - Northumberland
« on: 23 March 2011, 16:24:21 »
Just bought a 2.6 CDX (60000 miles), but can't find any history of a cambelt change. Does anyone know of a reliable garage in Hexham or Newcastle areas & approx price?

Omega General Help / Re: Central Locking won't unlock
« on: 25 May 2009, 18:22:04 »
Thanks for your help, that worked perfectly.  Still can't start the car (no ignition & alarm sounds) but I think a new battery in the key might be the first place to start.  Make note to self...."Do not leave handbook in car ever again"

No joy turning key....seems to reach a detent which it clicks past and then nothing.  I have noticed that the dashboard alarm indicator light isn't flashing, could it be the control unit or something as daft as a flat battery?  Still need to get into the car though.

Omega General Help / Autobox not changing gear
« on: 08 July 2008, 21:48:02 »
Towards the end of a fast(ish) 300 mile drive in my 2001 3.0ltr MV6 the "automatic gearbox" sign on the mfd lit up and the box seemed to lock in top gear, although I could still drive it as a manual.  I stopped for about 30 minutes and when I re-started the problem appeared to have disappeared.  Anybody got any ideas...I haven't checked the oil level yet, but could it be overheating due to low oil level ?

Had exactly the same problem on my 3.0 MV6.  In desperation stuck a bottle of Barrs Leaks in the header tank.  Would rather have found and fixed the leak, but it cured the problem.  Haven't lost a drop since and the car works perfectly.

Omega General Help / Serious coolant loss
« on: 18 February 2008, 19:14:14 »
Got a 2001 3Ltr MV6 with 95000 miles on the clock.  I average about 40 miles per day and have to add about a litre of coolant every 3 days.  No obvious signs of a leak either under the bonnet or inside the vehicle and no mayo sludge on the dipstick or filler pipe and cap.  The engine runs perfectly with no misfires or lack of power and returns about 24.5 mpg.  I thought possible head gasket failure into cylinders rather than oil channels ???  Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated.  Any harm done if I just keep topping it up  (got a source for anti-freeze mix so cost not a problem)?

Omega General Help / Just bought MV6
« on: 11 December 2007, 15:32:03 »
Just bought my 1st Omega - 3Ltr MV6 & have a couple of queries you may be able to help me with.  The vehicle came without a handbook and I've ordered one from E-Bay, but in the meantime what does the ECO button do?  The car was registered in May 2001 (Irish plates), but appears to be a pre-facelift model (window switches by gear selector).  Was this peculiar to the MV6 or do you think it may have been old stock?  It runs beautifully, but the coolant temperature varies quite considerably - is this common or do I have to be checking it out (coolant level is ok)?  Thanking you in advance.

Newbie Welcome Area / A prodigal returns
« on: 23 March 2011, 09:16:20 »
Hello everyone. After my last Omega (MV6) shuffled off its automotive coil 2 years ago I decided on a change - first a Mercedes E-Class then a Jaguar Sovereign.  Neither of these cars were a patch on the Omega, so I'm now the proud owner of a 2.6 CDX - not as fast as the MV6 but hey I'm not getting any younger.  Nice to be back !

Newbie Welcome Area / Newbie buying - advice needed
« on: 01 December 2007, 06:46:21 »
Hi there - buying Omega in the next few days.  Got a choice of Y reg 2.5 CD (60,000 miles) or 03 reg 3.2 Elite (110,000 miles) for an extra £1400. Both cars seem about the same mechanical & bodily condition.  Any advice on what to look out for and which might be the better buy would be much appreciated.  Not too bothered about fuel consumption (currently running a 3.1 Isuzu Trooper tank), but don't want to be silly about it.
