Omega General Help / Re: Coolant pouring out from rear of engine
« on: 18 September 2020, 10:03:13 »
Thanks for all your help. Much obliged.

Hopefully get the Dowty washers today. The HBV seems to still be in Germany....I guess Covid will slow it's delivery. Was hoping to get it buttoned up over the weekend but more likely next weekend now.

Will let you know how I get on.

All the best.

Regards,

Mel.

Thanks again!

@Henry: have ordered the RS ones (16.7 x 24 mm) are the perfect match to mine. Guess I will have 46 spares!!

@Doctor Gollum: Did try Vauxhall and it is a real pain to get parts - didn't get anywhere. The nearest Vauxhall dealer really only wants to sell new cars not old ladies like the Omega!! Do you use a particular tame dealer that has a decent parts person that is willing to spend time looking up parts for future reference.

Hopefully get the old girl up and running soon  :)

Cheers,

Mel.

Thanks Doctor.

I can't seem to source these....maybe I am looking in the wrong place. Can you give me a website please?

The bolts themselves look OK, however on one bolt the top rubber seal is split and may have been leaking. Is it possible to get rubber washers and the metal washers and re-use the old bolts?

Thanks for all your help.

Regards.

Hi thanks everyone!

The leak started after the air conditioning was turned on and set to LO. So that concurs with the Doctor's diagnosis!! On closer inspection the top of the HBV where there is a small oblong opening near the mushroom top of the device, looks a little wet as if coolant may have leaked out. Is this how they fail (normally)?

I have already started dismantling the car - the plenum and the inlet manifolds are off and I have fully inspected all of the heater hoses at the rear. I have identified the HBV and have ordered a replacement from autodoc (which I hope is an OK firm to use).

I can't therefore try Doctor Gollum's test as the car is a bit in pieces at the moment - guess I was a little enthusiastic to try and find a split hose or similar ::)

I have also removed the elbow at the rear of the valley area to try and get a better view of the transfer coolant pipe which I also suspected earlier in my investigation. I can't see any signs of leakage and the way the coolant was pouring out, it could not be a small leak. It was running like a tap, so to speak.

Is there any way of testing the HBV now that I have it removed from the car? Would be very satisfying to 100% identify a failed HBV before I set about re-assembly.

Cheers and best regards to all.

Omega General Help / Coolant pouring out from rear of engine
« on: 15 September 2020, 10:41:07 »
Hi

I have a 1999 V6 Omega Estate which has developed a coolant leak with the engine running and fully warmed up.

As far as I can see the coolant is pouring out like an open tap from the rear of the engine dropping on the floor from the bell housing area.

Can't see any split hoses.

Any ideas?

Any help or advice fully appreciated.

Omega General Help / Re: Rough Running When Warmed up
« on: 18 June 2020, 12:44:49 »
Hi Nick.

Thanks for your reply and help. I will take a look at the DIS unit over the weekend.

Would the DIS cause issues when the engine warms up ? That is my only doubt that it might be this unit or leads/plugs.

However, I have noticed that the spongy material that forms part of the rear edge seal with the bonnet is soaking wet. This is just above the location of the DIS - is this a clue that the DIS may have deteriorated through water ingress from the spongy material losing its water-proof properties?

I have also noticed that when the rough running occurs the exhaust is smoky, white smoke and steamy looking. Hence my head gasket worry.

If the lambda sensor was not working properly would this cause lumpy running and white smoke?

Have had the car from new and so I know the history of it and have serviced it regularly over the last 20 odd years!!

Many thanks.

Regards,

Mel.

Omega General Help / Rough Running When Warmed up
« on: 17 June 2020, 19:47:57 »
Hi

My V6 petrol starts as always first time with no problems. Runs a sweet as you like while it is cold. As it reaches normal running temperature it starts to run rough through the rev range up to about 2000 revs and then seems to be not too bad.

My thoughts were:

* head gasket going home

* Lambda sensor knacked

* DIS pack dying

Anyone had any of these issues which may have similar symptoms?

Appreciate your help with this - I just wish that the OBD diagnostics was available via an app. We have an MGTF that had a misfire problem which was traced to the Lambda sensor - which I easily diagnosed via the OBD2 diags port using free app.....

Thanks very much.

Omega General Help / Exhaust is Emitting Water!!
« on: 10 June 2020, 11:16:52 »
Hi

My V6 is spitting water out of the exhaust. Car seems to run normally. Could this be the beginning of head gasket failure or perhaps oil cooler?

I can't see any sludge/mayo in oil on filler cap or in coolant bottle, however I have not changed the oil so can't be 100% sure.

Any ideas gratefully appreciated.

Cheers.

Omega General Help / Re: 2.5 V6 Starting Problem - Help!!
« on: 27 February 2019, 12:32:39 »
Hi

Thanks for all the replies.

Checked fuel and pump - there is plenty of petrol at the petrol pipe - if I take off the union petrol squirts out at quite a rate!

Engine does start and runs lumpy which makes me think it cannot be the crank sensor. Had the crank sensor fail when the car was still in warranty and had engine light on and definitely would not even fire. No engine light and from my simple OBD Elm 327 no fault codes.

Question: if the air flow meter is disconnected/removed will the engine run normally or will it run lumpily?

Thanks again.

Cheers,

Mel.

Omega General Help / 2.5 V6 Starting Problem - Help!!
« on: 27 February 2019, 10:35:39 »
Hi Folks

I have a 1999 Omega Elite 2.5 V6 petrol which has run almost faultlessly for the 20 years I have owned her (from new).

I now have a problem....when I try and start her she will fire up and run very lumpy for a few seconds then stop and will not start apart from firing and running for about 2 seconds.

I have checked a few things....

If I get the car to start and run (lumpy at first) and then put my hand over the air inlet at the air flow meter, she will run and rev pretty normally sucking the palm of my hand. Could it be the actual air flow meter that is at fault or does the problem lie elsewhere? Is there a way of checking the air flow meter to see if it works properly?

Appreciate any help/experience on this please!! :)

Many thanks,

Mel.

Yes I have taken the solenoid off the car and applied 12V and it is dead!

Does anyone know where I can buy a replacement or obtain part number?

Thanks guys.

Hi

The solenoid that unlocks the gear selector when in park has failed on my 1998 V6 Elite.

I need to try and source a replacement.

Can anybody help with part number and where I may be able to obtain one?

Many thanks guys.

Mel.
