Problem sorted. Thanks for advice Mike, it sort of led to the solution. I've never been the most practical person and after 2 and a half hours of fishing with coat hanger, lost temper and got biggest pair of grips and yanked door button up as hard as i could. Button popped into place and door unlocked. Now works fine manually but not on remote control. I can live with that. 
bad missfire, vanishing coolant, pressurised water hoses, petrol smell in coolant. What I can't understand is that while I was trying to limp the poor old dear home in this condition, every now and again the missfire vanished and the engine burst into life with full power for about a half mile, then back to missfire, juddering and practically no power. Question is how can the problem get temporarily better? Garage aren't interested and just want to get on with changing the head gasket, won't even pressure test it, but I'm not keen on spending £600 if there may be sone other cause.
