Omega General Help / Re: poor brakes
« on: 23 October 2009, 19:53:02 »
bled the brakes (again) and although the pedal only feels a bit less spongy the brakes are really sharp now, what a difference. I am surprised that a bit of air in the system seems to result in very little servo brake assistance. I suppose the lower pressure with air in the system is reflected in the servo not really kicking in. Anyway a good result - many thanks.

Omega General Help / poor brakes
« on: 22 October 2009, 23:47:26 »
Hi
car (2.0 GLS 98) was stood for about a year and when I took it to be tested the brakes were very very spongy so called off the test. Anyway I bled the brake system and the brakes seemed better, if still a little spongy but passed the MOT test ok.
now done a couple of hundred miles and the brakes still do not seem right. There is a fair bit of play on the pedal initially and then the pedal seems quite heavy to depress and is spongy. My guess is that this is to do with the servo, but not sure.
I will bleed the brakes again tomorrow and have a look about - can some of the experts on here diagnose my problem
from the description I have given?

Omega General Help / flushing additives to engine oil
« on: 15 October 2009, 22:58:24 »
Hi
My 2.0i had a problem when I bought it 3 years ago. The oil pressure warning light would come on at random times and it was low pressure not the switch judging by the rattle from the engine. I sorted this by changing the oil filter which I guessed was blocked and the engine seemed not to have come to any harm as about 20k miles since then. Anyway seemed to resolve the problem at that time.
Now the problem has returned and I am about to change oil and filter. Also I plan to use some STP Engine flush, which is claimed to release sludge/caked deposits before emptying the old oil.
My questions are:-
1) does this flushing additive actually work i.e. get rid of sludgy deposits?
2) Is it likely to be the sump pan wire mesh filter that is blocked as well as the filter element and in the event that a filter change does not work is there a way of unblocking this mesh without taking off the sump pan?
3) Is there some other cause that would explain the intermittent loss of oil pressure, that i have not thought of?

Omega General Help / fault code - on 1998 2.0i 16V
« on: 12 October 2009, 21:03:11 »
Still trying to sort out intermittent misfire - next step replace fuel filter but on doing paperclip test to check out engine mgt faults I get the following result, which I cannot find in any fault code list.
ignition on, engine not running code 10-3
ignition on, engine running - no fault codes showing
any ideas?

Omega General Help / Re: Water (?) in fuel and draining tank
« on: 10 October 2009, 22:41:27 »
According to t'internet, Isopropanol is used 500ml/40L petrol to absorb any water and then just burn through the system with the petrol. Apparently a standard method of clearing water from fuel tanks/lines - sounds straightforward and cheap.
Has anyone experience of doing this, sound a lot better than draining tank etc!

Omega General Help / Water (?) in fuel and draining tank
« on: 10 October 2009, 21:30:51 »
Hi
my car was stood off the road for about one year - since it has been resurrrected and tested etc it has developed a misfire. This has happened 3 times and only after filling with fuel, the misfire lasts for 1/2 hours of running and then is fine.
My theory is that this is condensation in the tank, that filling up is dispersing this causing the misfire and then after a while it settles again to a puddle in the bottom of the tank, giving no problems until I fill up again.
Does this sound feasible or is there another problem I have not thought of.
In the event it is water/other substance in the tank what is my best way of removing it. What about meths to mix with the water?
Is it possible to short out the fuel pump relay ( as i did with my old carlton when I filled the tank with diesel) and if so where is this relay. I would rather not have to take the sender unit out and fish around in the tank.
Any ideas/suggestions welcomed

Omega General Help / Re: oil leak and unidentifed tube? omega 2.0i
« on: 07 October 2009, 20:10:44 »
thanks Abiton that is the item - a relief not to have to find somewhere to fit it! Oil leak seems to be slowing down after one hr ticking over, hopefully just residue from cambox gasket which I think now ok - fingers crossed.

hi chaps thanks for quick responses:-
the short tube with the round plastic end cover is not the gearbox breather pipe which I have located, so the mystery remains
not sure about references to "genuine" rocker cover gasket and black goo sealant - the gasket I used looked just like the old one but no instructions to use sealant as well - where would the sealant go all over or just over the camshaft bearing caps at the front and the recesses at the back? What is the black sealant recommended?
Thanks for your patience!

Omega General Help / oil leak and unidentifed tube? omega 2.0i
« on: 07 October 2009, 17:36:31 »
hi
I have a really annoying oil leak from the back end of the engine - not sure whether it is a rear main bearing oil seal or just the residual mess still descending from a big leak on the cam box seal which I have now fixed. Maybe the leak is coming from high up at the back of the engine and it is very hard to access and see what is going on.
What are the likely possibilities here for the cause of a leak?

Also there is a small tube (approx 5" long ) with a round plastic endpiece that looks as if it should push in somewhere but where and what is its function - it seems to come from the region of the back of the distributor but nowhere to fit it? Is it for distributor diagnostics?
Totally confused

Omega General Help / central locking
« on: 12 April 2008, 21:05:47 »
hi
had a damaged drivers door (98 2.0) so replaced with one from a scrapper - no key for the replacement door and planned to switch the lock from my old door. unfortunately having fitted the door whilst checking that the windows and mirror adjuster worked I decided to push down the drivers door central locking button.  the result being that I now cannot open the door in order to remove the trim panel and change over the lock  the lock.
pretty stupid but I did not recall that with all doors locked by the drivers door button that you could not just lift the button and release all the doors.
question is how do I disable the central locking or release the drivers door - as I have a spare inner door panel cutting access holes in the trim panel is ok if necesary :'(
