Omega General Help / Re: Lack of throttle response
« on: 14 May 2008, 15:04:33 »
To cut a long story short, Yesterday I took off fuel flow/return pipe and elec assembly from fuel tank, found that there is no fuel pump. Assume pump in tank is for the petrol versions? traced pipework to engine bay as best as I could and cannot find a low pressure pump (this would explain no fuse 18). Fuel filter arrived and fitted it.
Going home approx 18 miles the car ran well not at all sluggish all the way, but approx half hour later went into town and the car went back to being sluggish again. This morning went to work and the car is running fine again. The EML has not lit since friday, not sure if this is good or not. Any ideas ??

I have cleaned the EGR valve, it was a bit dirty (does any one know when the vac should be on to that valve). changed the air filter, looked for any obvious vac line leaks etc, but it is still not any better.
While waiting for the fuel filter to arrive. I thought I would check the suggestion about the low pressure fuel pump may be at fault, I can not hear it running so I thought I would check the fuse (according to handbook No18), no fuse and there no wires to fuse No18 ? does any body know which fuse it could be, or which coloured wires are for the pump at the tank end. I could then check for power etc.

The engine management light will light up for a short time now and then, but the trottle resonse can be for along preiod. I will see if I can catch it while hooked up to the laptop, but even if I dont catch it its a good suggestion and worth looking into. If nothing else I have now several good excuses for getting out of going shopping this weekend. Thanks

Omega General Help / Lack of throttle response
« on: 10 May 2008, 12:28:16 »
I have a problem with my Omega 2.2DTI Estate Year 2000. The car will at times run fine, and other times there is a real lack of throttle response, and the engine management light will light up now and then for a short period.

I have plugged in an elm327-usb the software is scantool version 1.13, it is showing throttle pedal response etc which seems fine, but there are no error codes showing. Ive been told that if the engine management lights for less than thirty seconds it will not store the error codes. I am thinking of looking around the air intake and vac lines to see if anything obvious is wrong. But if somebody could please advise and point me in the right direction, it would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

General Discussion Area / Re: welding and surge protection
« on: 08 May 2008, 11:45:59 »
In the good old days you would disconnect the battery, because it is possible to damage the alternator, and you could also damage the battery if you did not (it might not happen but why take the risk).
Nowadays you have the above risk plus very sensitive electronics. In some cases the car manufacturer would not recommend you jump leading your car without surge protection.
When welding yes you should put the earth lead as close as possible to the weld, but electrics does not always take the shortest route, but it does take the route of least resistance. It can be surprising how long that can be.
Don’t forget the shell of the car is also part of the electrical circuit. The reason I have now gone for the surge protection device is because after welding on my car and reconnecting the battery, I then tried to put in the radio code. I found out the code given to me by the previous owner was wrong and it cost me £26 to get it from the manufactures.
I have also spoken to people over the years that claim not to bother to do either, and get away with it. I personally will not be taking the risk.

Firstly hello to all
I was reading a discussion on the forum as to whether you should disconnect your battery before welding. I was always taught to disconnect before welding, if the circuit is open then there is no way for the high welding amps going back through your sensitive electronics. But I have recently been using a surge protection device that clips across the battery. The company is sealey part No PROSAF/12 not cheap approx £70.00, but saves a lot of hassle
