Omega General Help / Something else I have noticed
« on: 27 July 2008, 16:11:24 »
Whilst underneath the flying sofa sorting out the driver's side wishbone yesterday I saw the rear of the block looked damp.  I've had to top up the coolant tank a couple of times in the past month - not a lot, just a pint in total I think - so I'm guessing I have a split hose or core plug gone somewhere. towards the rear of the engine.

Does anyone have any clues before the sockets come out to play again?  :)

Well, took her for a test drive this afternoon and still got the rumbling sound, especially with a quarter of right lock on at around 20MPH.  So, next weekend I'll be changing the wheel bearing.  If the noise is still there then I will be completely clueless.

thanks very much for the info, I'm just finishing off the driver's side and tightening up everything now so this is very handy.

Also got the chance to do up the caliper bolts with some loctite seeing as I forgot to do this when I changed the discs!  ::)

Omega General Help / Another daft question I'm afraid

Hello all,

A bit of a daft question regarding replacing the front wishbones and drop links.  I've read the How-To's and it all seems pretty straightforward but there have been some references to tightening up the fixings to the correct torque setting - which I didn't see stated.  So if anyone knows them could they help out?

I feel a bit mean and stingy asking to be honest.  I did try and buy a Haynes manual but unfortunately both Halfords I visited had none in stock.  :(

Thanks muchly

Pete

Sniffing around the web I've found that Lemforder UK are not far from me in Darlaston.  I'm guessing though this is a sales and sitribution site so they may not deal direct.  Probably worth me calling them to find out about buying wishbones.

Nearside wishbones bushes gone.  Offside not bad.  Off to buy a pair of new ones for fitting at the weekend - and do the drop links while I'm at it.

Depends, probably, have you had any work done recently? Your camber must be way out. Get it sorted asap. Or you risk a buggerd tyre or a blow out on the inside edge! Grab the wheel and pull it about or push it with your foot. If you see any play at all something wrong. The wheel should be rock solid. Could well be wishbones buggerd.

Only work done that I can recall is the new disks and pads recently, the springs look okay.

I can gt it checked easily enough, garage is only down the road thankfully.

Right now I have a set of Goodyear Excellence 225/55 R16 on the motor.  They replaced a set of Michelin Pilots which were very impressive but boy were they expensive!  The Goodyears are decent tyres, low noise, grip towards that of the Michelins, good value too.

Fleabay seems to have some big variances on prices for wishbones with a brand new pair offered at under £30 along with £45 for one.

Reading through the forums I think the drop links could do with retiring as well.  Cheap as chips via the auction sites though, unless anyone has a better outlet?

I have a benign rubbing on the strut and the tyre wall along with the inner edges scrubbing off, so does that mean the bushes in my wishbones have had it and the camber will need doing too?

....oh, and having read the thread about drop links I think that may well be the next job on the list!  ;D

Thank the Lord for this place, I'd be lost otherwise.

Well, I got her back a bit before 5 this afternoon, resplendent with brand new Vauxhall 'cake cutter' locking nuts on - hardened steel, Thatcham certified and all that.  The old ones are a real mess having been subjected to a splined socket hammered over them and ripped forcibly from their homes.  I'm just glad they're off now.

So, tomorrow it's time for the Full Monty Geometry Check!

Thanks for all your advice, it's much appreciated.

Thanks for the advice everyone, all very helpful.  I'm working from home today so I managed to pop the car over to a local garage who look after the car normally for me.  They've got a few options, a couple very similar to the suggestions on here funnily enough!  They'll hopefully have it sorted and I'll have her back late today/early tomorrow.  I'm just praying it comes out without resorting to the more extreme measures which could damage the wheel.  Thankfully the garage is a good outfit, I'd recommend them to anyone in fact.

The multi-fit socket I've seen before and have wondered about having one for those times when you just can't find the right one to fit.  Again, never got round to it.

With this going on I've been questioning myself and asking whether I did the damage, as a bit of self-doubt always creeps in at times like this.  but the fact that the shearing has ocured anti-clockwise says that someone's been having a fiddle.  A bit pointless getting wound up about it now as the damage has been done and may as well just get on with putting it back to rights again.

Unfortunately Jonathan these are the circular type with a three-pin fitment so banging a socket on probably won't sort it.

It's a bit ironic really.  When I first saw them I thought about changing them for a different type but didn't get round to it.
