Good morning everyone,

I hope you are all well. I'm looking for some advice about a perplexing and very annoying leak into my passenger footwell. (2002, Saloon, 3.2, Elite.)

A few months ago I noticed the carpet was slightly wet in the passenger footwell after I'd washed the car. I know all about the scuttle drain getting blocked and the water pouring in through the heater air intake. I have already had this issue about 10 years ago and had to replace the blower motor as a result. I therefore keep the scuttle drain clear and have not had an issue until recently.

The water seems to come from somewhere behind the dash and runs BEHIND the thick insulation/foam which is under the carpet. Initially it also seemed to be running down the wiring loom in the left-hand corner of the footwell. I've removed the glovebox, but there's so many wires, pipes and plastic parts in there it's hard to see right to the top or back.

I read on another post that it may be coming in where the wiring looms pass through the bulkhead and into the car. I have therefore cleaned and sealed all around these with CT1 after removing the plastic scuttle cover to get access. This seems to have stopped some of the water running down the wiring loom, but I'm still getting water ingress.

I thought it may be the heater matrix, but there is no obvious coolant loss from the header tank, the water doesn't smell like its got antifreeze in it, and I cant see any wetness on the drivers side.

There is also a 'flap' in the foam about half way up and if you remove this you can see a black plastic section attached to the bulkhead. No sign of a leak from this. My next step is to cut out the foam so I can see more, but before I do this I want to ask everyone here if they have seen anything like this before? I cant see any evidence of rust either.

The water ingress happens when the car is standing still, so I don't think it's coming from under the wheel arch. I think its coming from the outside in and running down, maybe from the windscreen or maybe some other issue with the bulkhead/scuttle.

At the moment the carpet has been up in the passenger footwell for about 4 months and I want to get it sorted.

Any ideas or previous experience with this would be very much appreciated.

It seems this post has lead to some lively debate.

I'd like to clear up a few points:

1. My mum has owned the car since 2003 when she bought it from a Vauxhall dealership. It was the dealer principles car.
2. The HBV has never been replaced, unless it was done in the first year of its life. So I therefore assume its original one and has done really well. The whole car has done really well, apart from the passenger door solenoid, blower motor and a broken rear spring, this leak is the only issue it's had in 20 years.
3. I'd like to do it myself as I worry about how careful a garage will be, and what issues this lack of care could create in future.
4. Sadly I don't have the mechanical competency, experience or the correct tools (Torx socket set, torque wrench) to replace the plenme successfully and for this it will have to go to a garage. Sadly we can't afford Vauxhall prices and I don't believe there is any mechanics left at any Vauxhall dealership who has seen, let alone worked on an Omega. So I don't trust them to do a good job either. My local garage will listen if I tell them the Omega aficionados on this forum recommend a way forward. It makes it easier for them.
5. Without wanting to cause a further discussion the cam belt hasn't been replaced. It probably should be done, but Mum drives less than 1000 miles a year so we are holding off on that. Soon she may not be able to drive at all (she's 85) so I want to keep the car going a bit longer for her at minimum cost.
6. It's the original windscreen.
7. The bottom trim on the windscreen has dropped off all the way along (falls off every time I wash the car), apart from last 10mm on the passenger side, so I hope I can (very carefully) remove this and gain access to the scuttle screws without having to place undue force on the screen/frame.
8. After everyones advice and help I think I may be able to remove the scuttle to gain the access necessary.
9. I also think I'd like to remove the wiper mechanism, but does this use regular nuts and bolt or torx bolts? I have torx screwdriver, but not a torx socket set.
10. The leak stops when you turn off the climate control and starts again when you turn it on. I can see its not coming from the heater matrix as its not coming inside the car or out of the AC drain pipes. I can also see the water dripping high-up from the location of the HBV.
11. I'm going to order a HBV from e-bay as they are inexpensive. Would you trust this IS a genuine part?

I really appreciate everyones comments, and it's great to see how passionate everyone is about their Omegas. Everyone has different views in life. I'm pleased to get everyones opinion and then I can then make my own decision. Everyones personal experience gives their individual view weight which is great. However, in life we can't all agree all the time and there is nothing wrong with that.

Finally my Mum and Dad once bought a manual 1987 Vauxhall Senator 3.0 which was an ex-Leicestershire Constabulary motorway car. It was the best car we could afford at the time. Ex-police cars were cheap(er). It was a great car, but it was far from perfect. A previous front-on collision must have split the battery at some point in its past and the acid rotted the chassis from the inside. But it was great while it lasted. You could pull away from a stop in third! I wouldn't buy another ex-cop car though, it was too rough around the edges.

Good evening everyone,

I hope you are all well.

My Mums Omega 3.2 Elite V6 (2002) has spring a coolant leak. After a lot of research on this very forum I am almost 95% sure its the Heater Bypass Valve (HBV). The symptoms are:

• Puddle on the floor with the engine running and the AC system ON.
• Water running from the left-hand side (drivers-side) at the rear of the engine, between the off-side exhaust and the bell-housing. Looks like its running around the bell housing and dripping off.
• If you use a torch and peer at the back of the engine you can see the leak coming from the area of the Heater Bypass Valve (high up), but I can't actually see it running from the valve itself as there is too much engine in the way and I can't look round a corner!
• If you put the climate control (AC) into 'Off' mode before you switch off the engine, then start the car the next day with the climate control still 'Off' there is no leak. Switch the climate control 'On' and the leak instantly starts.
• Leak stops when you turn off the ignition.

I will be getting a local garage to do the work and I have read its best to remove the scuttle and 'struggle' than remove the plenum. I'd rather the plenum wasn't removed as its never been off the car and I think its best left alone as I expect there's a lot that can go wrong if its not re-fitted correctly.

Whats your view? How likely is it the HBV? and should I ask the garage to go the scuttle removal or plenum removal route?

Good afternoon everyone,

I wanted to update you on this and say thanks for all your advice, especially to 'Doctor Gollum' whose eBay links really helped. I purchased the springs and shocks he recommended (from the seller he recommended) and they have been fitted by my local garage without issue. Its so far so good. The car is the correct ride height, it passed its MOT and the headlamps aren't pointing to the floor, nor is the Self Levelling pump running continuously. However I have no idea how the Self Levelling system was disabled (by Vauxhall main dealer) because the Relay and Fuse are as they should be and from what I understand the actuator on the rear is plugged in. Having said all that I'm still getting periodic 'Headlamp Range' warnings on the information display which I was getting before the Self Levelling shocks were changed. Is this connected in anyway?

On another note 'Migv6 le Frog Fan' said they may be interested in the old self-levelling shocks. I have them and am happy (and one good spring) to discuss a price if Migv6 or anyone else is interested. To the best of my knowledge they work, but the metal casings are quite rusty. How can I post share/pics?

Once again thanks very much for your help. Its good to have the car roadworthy again. As an a-side my wifes car was in the garage this week and she was forced to drive the 'old Omega'. However when she got home she said she'd like to swap her Honda EX Civic for it....!

Hello Everyone,

Thank you very much for your help. I'm going to change both the springs with standard ones and I'm considering changing the shocks which as you say probably should be changed as they are the original ones. I must add though that the vehicle only has 55k on the clock. Do you think I could/should keep the original shocks in that case? As I will be paying a garage to do the work I'm conscious that it shouldn't be much more labour to change the shocks as the lower bolts will be disconnected when the suspension is dropped to change the springs - leaving just the top mounts in the boot to remove. However cost is a big concern. I just don't want to find the shocks fail the MOT next year and I've got to have the job done again.

The Sachs shocks Doctor Gollum has kindly referenced are gas-filled. Is this the preference to oil-filled ones?

Hello Everyone,

I recently got new tyres on my 2002 3.2 Elite Saloon and the garage said one of the rear springs was broken in two places. The MOT is due in December and I'll need to get this work done by a local garage.

The car has (had) self levelling rear suspension 'level control' but this ceased to function about 10 years ago when the ECU 'failed' and jacked up the back end like a dragster. I removed the cable from the ECU and the car went back to a 'normal' height. Its been like this ever since. So although it has level control, we cant use it.

Money is tight and I'm keen to fit low cost springs. I have been reading the forums and researching options and there is a lot of discussion about this while the cost and specification of aftermarket springs vary a lot.

My question is, can I fit standard springs to the car even though it currently has the original self levelling versions? The vehicle does under 1k per year and I just need to get it through the MOT, however I don't want it to look 'silly' by being too high (or too low) at the rear.

I'd appreciate any advice and yes, I plan to have BOTH rear springs changed together, but I DON'T want to change the shock absorbers which are currently the self-levelling type.

I'm currently considering two:

KVB - RJ6226 - 268mm length - inconstant wire diameter
KVB - RX5414 - 251mm length - constant wire diameter
