Just to let everyone know, the culprit of the noise was the fact that the wheel bolts were missing.

Replaced the whole hub and brake disc earlier, that's s job and a half!

Now running smooth with no knocking noise...Cat indeed?!

Right, after much head scratching and 20 bensons trying to figure out just what was wrong, i had a feeling the noise was coming from the drivers side wheel.

I went to tighten the bolts after reading a thread from another car forum and two of the bolts were hanging on by a thread, tried to tighten them up and they have sheared off, leaving half of the bolt inside the hub. Seems like the muppet who had the car before me has crossed the threads in the wheel and they have come loose.

Took for a short spin and the noise has dramatically reduced.

I'm thinking that it could now be a knackered hub that created the knocking.

Back to the garage in the morning!

Right, it's been at the garage today and his diagnosis is that the cat has gone and needs replacing, although he said he can't be entirely sure until it is replaced.

I've had cats go before and familiar with the horrible rattle that comes with it but this is a totally different sound.

Anyone have any thoughts? I don't want to spend a couple of hundred quid on something that wont resolve the issue.

That was my 1st thought but, I've had heat shield probs before and this is a totally different sound :(

With the knocking/clanking, it's a very dull noise, not a rattle, so that kind of eliminates the heat shield idea but of course I welcome any relpy.

I'm just a little bit puzzeled as why the noise goes when accelerating and when the brakes are applied.

I'm actually thinking it could be clutch related as the noise is louder with the clutch pedal pressed but what throws me is that it is there also with it not being pressed. Nightmare!

Hi everyone.

Hopefully someone can help me on this.

Last week I noticed a rattle coming from the exhaust (cat area) that was noticeable at low speeds (town driving) but went away at high speeds.

I've done over 700 miles this weekend and the noise has gone, however, there is now a very loud knocking/clonking noise that is apparent from driving at low speeds and becomes louder when the clutch is pressed. It dissapears when I apply the brakes and also when I get to around 30mph.

I'm not sure if the exhaust I first had has had a knock on effect after having done a lot of mileage.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

James.

Thanks for all your help. Would the drop links wobble when moved if they were faulty? How could i tell?

Will get onto this in the morning.

Hi guys,

I have a problem. I have this knocking noise from my front wheel (mainly passenger side but also a little on drivers side) which is very noticable at low speeds (up to 40ish) and especially over bumps or pot holes.

It also feels that the car slides when doing this if im turning both from front end and back.

Actually thinking about it, it may be happening on the back passenger side wheel or im just imagining it because of the front.

I had the anti roll bar bushes replaced but it's still happening.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Had a second opinion done as 90% wasn't good enough for me.

Turns out its the anti roll bar links.

Took the old girl to the local garage, guy said he was 90% sure it was the mounting struts that needed replacing and quoted me £168 Inc!

He said he couldn't be absolutely sure until they had been fitted...

He said that the bushes don't look that worn.

I've seen that 2 front struts don't cost a lot and wondering if this is a difficult job?

Many thanks.

Omega General Help / Shudder on front on end
« on: 18 January 2010, 15:08:10 »
Hi guys,

Having just fixed my omega from the last problem, i have noticed another....

Whilst driving at low speeds and over any bumps in the road, both wheels seem to shudder as if they are losing grip. Higher speeds, it's a lot less noticable.

I have had the car up on axels to see if it has any play in the wheels but there isn't. The movement does not affect the steering in any way either and i don't feel it through the steering.

Doe's anyone have any ideas?

Omega General Help / Re: ignition key
« on: 16 January 2010, 04:41:29 »
This happens to me at times, such as if I pull the key out too quickly and don't get a clunk sound...

My advice is to slowly insert the key at an angle and slowly wiggle the key into the barrel. Works for me when it happens...

I think i'll get a second opinion then. Don't really want to be spending upwards of a grand on a new one atm...

Didn't really give any details, he just said that the crankshaft had "gone" and would be quite expensive to replace.

After weighing up factors it just seemed to costly to repair.

I am looking for another omega now as ive been bitten by the bug!

Hi Guys,

Just to close to this question, i took the car to my garage yesterday and my crankshaft has buggered so being a 10 year old car, it has gone on ebay for spares etc. Too expensive to repair :(

Thanks for your help :)
