Read the fault codes anyway.....and report back.....possible code 19!

Thank god the cold start injectors are done away with!

LOL the worst thing about 7th injectors is where manufacurers used to put them.  BMW M30 engines spring to mind!

I'll check the codes and report back, thanks!

It's the extended pulse system that the X25XE uses; 7th injectors etc went out with the loss of the old L-Jetronics..

There are several reasons why the really cold temperature could cause start issues, and also even more that are just a coincidence.

There's only one ECU temperature sensor, which should still work fine at temperatures much lower than we get here.

Does (for some strange reason) the Engine ECU light flash after a failed start?  Will it fire if you keep the starter going for longer?

It will fire if I keep cranking.  There are no extraneous dash lights involved.

Omega General Help / Cold start issues.
« on: 03 January 2009, 22:41:24 »
Hello,

My 2.5 '99 pre facelift Elite has been having trouble with the very cold weather.  Normally cold starts are fine, but when the ambient temp is below 0 C it takes 3 or 4 goes to get her going.  The battery is strong and once running is is smooth and sweet.

My experience of cars is mainly '80's stuff, BMW's and Jags, so I would normally suspect a Therotime switch or the 7th injector.  I know that later BMW's used a longer duration during cold cycle and only had 6 injectors, is this the case with an X25XE?  Also is there a sensor that only cuts in for extreme cold starting?

Thanks for your help, BTW the car is garaged, so I am sure it is a cold not a frost issue.

I've found it to be both useful and intensely annoying all at the same time. I do many motorway miles and a few times I've been saved from 10 mile of solid traffic after the motorway has been closed. Most times if it says 10 or 15 minutes delayit's not always worth turning off, but when it says "severe delay - avoid" it's a life saver.

It is very annoying though because it keeps interrupting - normally when there's someting good on the radio.

LOL thanks for saving me the time in writing a reply, my sentiments precisley! ;D

Omega General Help / Re: My MPG
« on: 17 November 2008, 16:40:48 »
My 2 cents.

My 2.5V6 Elite (prefacelift 1999) returns 21mpg pocing about in Somerset, lanes and all, and just managed 29.4 return run to London for a theater trip.

My XJ-S does around 15 mpg on the local circuit, and has done 20.8 mpg on a London run.

I always run my tyres near the upper end of the range, I think the Omega is 32psi front 30 rear, but I am not sure how much help this actually is.

Given that the Omega is more comfy I think it is a small price to pay for the amount of car you get to drive.

When filling up I always think of the depreciation on say a BMW 535d and feel better about another £60 of unleaded! ;D

I have driven 5 Omegas.
Everyone pulled to the left.
3 I know the geometry was set up correctly as per Vauxhall's manual.
I don't really notice it unless I have been driving the XJ-S a lot.

I have been told that the Omega pulls to the left as a charecteristic (sp?) of the car.

Am I wrong, please do tell.

Cheers.

This means absolutely bu66er all. Mine pulled to the left until I paid Tony at Wheels-in-Motion a visit. He set the geometry to the correct settings, not just "within the book" OK but perfect and with an understanding of what he was doing, and now there's no pull whatsoever :y :y :y

Sounds ideal, I must admit, although I m used to the pull it makes the XJ-S feel like it pull right (if that makes sense) and to be honest I swap between my Miggy, my Jag and my wifes Volvo enough to make it a pain in the botty.

Where are wheels in motion based?

Omega General Help / Re: Gearbox - whether to get it upgraded...

By the way, the reasons for living so far from civilisation are many, the downsides are:

It is so quiet that my wifes breathing keeps me up.
I can't easily get my Miggy Tech-2'd

I'll stay in the sticks! ;) ;D

By the sounds of it my '99 pre facelift 2.5 Elite has already been done (it has a almost full main dealer history).

Is there any way of telling, ie a paperclip type test?
Only way is to plug in tech2 and see whats there, Afaik. There is no reason why a dealer would plug in tech2 for a service. Why do you think it has the latest software? Have you asked for a diagnostic? Even then they would not bother with the update most likely. You would have to ask for the update specifically and that would cause some head scratching. My 3.2 has full service history, not that its worth much, every out and bolt they touched was massively over tight. The Boy updated it on the first session. All as it left the factory until he worked his magic. Much better now.

I fear you over rate your dealer, although there are some good ones out there. Chances are though yours is still original version. Bit of a bugger your so far from civilisation.:-) Alton is the nearest to you i believe, as it stands?

The reason I think it may have been done is the car drives very nicely, much as the member who started this topic describes.
The Elite is a new car to me, it had been serviced by Vx main dealers in the Wirral and Shropshire up to 3k miles ago.
I will be having it serviced by an ex-Vx mechanic in Taunton.
I understand that there is going to maybe be a Tech-2 party in the southwest oneday.

Anything special to note about bleeding the cooling system, or just put the heating on full and slowly fill.   I ask because BMW's need a head of water to force the air out.

In my case:

Inlet out, coolant pipes at rear of engine off and out
Cup of tea
Coolant bottle out
Cup of tea
Air filter housing out
Cup of tea and a biscuit
Coolant transfer pipe out
Lunch
Heat shields off
Cup of tea
Front pipe disconnected
Go find plasters
Manifold off
Wife wants me in the house, time to clean up

About 2 days I reckon!

Thanks for the advice, looking forward to completing it if not doing it! :y
