was thincking more along the lines of a bad injector, possibly also washing all the oil of the cylinder wall. It would end up in the sump....

what was oil colour like?
The oil is still the colour of used oil, a sort of browny black. The car had a full big service about 6 months ago with a complete oil change, since then the car has not used any significant amount of oil

pull each plug and see if any are wet with fuel shortly aftyer running the engine for a shortime, also check colour.

beware running the car with a bad injector could bugger that bore if the oil is too thinned on the cylinder wall.

Re hg do you have any coolent loss at all...?
As in water in radiator. No, checked that first as I had a head gasket blow a long time ago on a different car. The colour is fine too.

I have to borrow a plug spanner from somewhere before I can check the plugs, that should be easy (not).

I am really thankful for all the help you are giving me btw.

Hi

The engine warning light in my 2.2 2001 omega came on yesterday. I checked the oil and it smells of petrol. Does anyone know why this could be? Having googled it, I have got the following:

a split in the petrol pump gasket.
a leaky piston
compression adjustment
change oil and sell the **** thing  :o

Anything more definite before it costs me an arm and a leg to find the problem?

cheers
hope you dont sale for someone from forum.

Thanks for all the welcome messages. The battleaxe pseudonym was coined many years ago when I was involved in crusading for a group against a multinational corporation, and I suppose it just stuck.

I have had a quote from Nick. This may sound a stupid questuion, but is he markymark? (I would have thought he would be nickynick  ;))
