The driver's seat heating in my '98 Elite has gone too!   :'(

The heating in the other seats still works though.

Apologies if this has already been covered but are there any simple checks that I can do to see if it's something silly that has failed? (Power connection???)

If the heater pad's not working am I right in thinking that the easiest solution is to get a replacement seat?

I'd be grateful for any advice.

Cheers.   :)

Omega General Help / Re: Coolant leak.

Thanks for the responses guys.

If it's the head gasket it'll probably be game over for the motor.

Could the coolant be leaking from somewhere else?  Are there any coolant hoses in the nearside rear area or could it be a core plug on the way out?

By the way, RobseyMV6, I live in Essex mate.

Cheers.   :)

Omega General Help / Coolant leak.
« on: 28 December 2009, 10:52:56 »
Wotcha All.

I've been nursing a slight coolant leak on my '98 Elite 3 litre auto for some 10 months which has got much worse over the last fortnight or so.  Now I'm losing about half a pint every 30 miles or so.

With the engine warming up, visible coolant vapour is now escaping from way down on the rear passenger side of the engine.  As it's quite low in the engine bay I've not been able to locate exactly where it's escaping from, whether it's a hose/pipe or the engine itself.

Strangely, the visible steam leak seems to subside once the engine's warmed up to normal operating temperature.  There's no sign of mayo on the oil filler pipe/cap, no sign of oil in the coolant and a garage did a block test the other day which was negative, which I understand means it's not likely to be head gasket failure.

Can anyone please give me any advice on what it could be?

Thanks in advance.   :)

Omega General Help / Gates cambelt kits.

Hello All.

My '98 3 litre Elite is due a cambelt kit change in the near future.  In the interests of saving a few quid, would you recommend using Gates' cambelt kits instead of the "genuine" Vauxhall kits?  I've heard Vauxhall sources their kits from Gates anyway - is this correct?

Any views would be greatly appreciated.   :)

Cheers.

Omega General Help / Exhausts.
« on: 21 July 2009, 17:10:07 »
Wotcha All.

I'm looking to replace the exhaust centre sections and the twin pipe back box on my '98 3 litre Elite saloon with used parts, due to skintness.

Are there any inherent issues/problems with trying to re-install used exhaust sections or should everything fit back together easily?

Also, what's the concensus of opinion on the quality of patented parts as opposed to genuine GM ones?  Would patented centre sections join up with GM front pipes and back boxes etc?  Do patented parts affect engine performance etc?

I'm in a bit of a hurry to get this work done so I don't want to bide my time waiting for genuine GM if it makes little difference.  Also, I've only seen patented exhausts on the (scarce) V6 Omegas in my local spares yards so I might have to wait a long while to source GM!

Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

Cheers.  :)

Omega General Help / Mystery Oil Loss
« on: 11 July 2009, 20:10:33 »
Wotcha All.

Having checked the oil level and found it to be up to the upper mark on the dipstick, I then did a 200 mile journey and the oil level warning in the computer display appeared.  It has to be said that some of this journey was on some fairly steep gradients.  I checked the oil level the following day and it stood between the dipstick levels.  There was no evidence of external leakage or oil in the coolant etc so I just topped it up to the mark again and set off (tentatively).  I have since covered about 800 miles and the oil level is steady at the upper dipstick mark.

Do you think something is amiss or has the oil gremlin visited for a drink?

Mine's a '98 3 litre Elite Auto - any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers.  :)

Omega General Help / Re: Minor coolant leak.

Thanks for your advice guys - I'll try a new expansion tank cap.

I had that sinking feeling that it might have been a head gasket problem - though the engine has never overheated in over 5 years of my ownership of the car.

Hopefully, as per your advice, it's something far more simple!  :)

Cheers.

Wotcha All.

Still can't find any evidence of an external engine coolant leak.  Are there any obvious symptoms of cylinder head gasket failure other than the coolant level dropping?  I understand that "mayo" in the oil filler cap and oil in the coolant are signs that the head gasket is failing - but I don't have any signs of these on my car.

According to the "H" manual only cylinder head gasket failure and/or cylinder / cylinder head cracking would cause an internal coolant leak.  Is this the case or are there other potential causes?

Looks in the manual like head gasket replacement is a gutsy (expensive) job...

Any advice would be much apreciated.   :)

Cheers.

Omega General Help / Minor coolant leak.

Wotcha All

My '98 3.0 Elite has developed a very minor (approx 400ml per 1500 miles) engine coolant leak.  I've looked under the bonnet with the engine running at operating temp but can find no evidence of a leak (steam, drips etc).  I also looked at the HBV but that looks fine and the oil filler cap shows no signs of "mayo".

Apart from replacing the HBV about three years ago I've never had the coolant level drop before - the only difference is that over the last few months I've doubled the usage of the car (this also coincides with noticing the drop in coolant).

Any advice would be much appreciated.   :)

Cheers.

Hello mate.

Sorry to state the obvious but it's not dripping condensed water from your cold air con pipes, is it?

Omega General Help / Re: Memory seats/mirrors.
« on: 02 April 2009, 09:26:57 »
Thanks Guys.

I'm pretty sure I'm setting the memory seats correctly so the mirrors must be knackered.

Apologies for my ignorance, how do I go about getting an ECU live data session?  Is it expensive?

Cheers.   :)

Omega General Help / Memory seats/mirrors.
« on: 31 March 2009, 09:35:31 »
Wotcha All.

When I use the memory function on my driver's seat ('98 Elite) the seat goes back to the correct position but the exterior and interior rear-view mirrors go all over the place meaning I have to manually adjust them again.

Is there an easy fix for this?

Since the interior mirror is moving automatically, is there a control stalk somewhere like there is with the exterior mirrors?  (I can't find one nor is there any mention of one in the owner's manual).

Any advice would be much appreciated.  :)

Cheers.

Omega General Help / Heater burning smell.
« on: 02 April 2009, 09:43:48 »
Wotcha All.

When setting the heating/ventilation sysytem to "heat" I get a slight smell like burning rubber in the cabin.  Although this is a recurrent problem (every drive in the last few months) the smell disappears after a while and does not occur when the system is set to "cold".  I've had a look under the bonnet with the heater on and cannot see any obvious signs of smoke or the probable cause.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers.   :)
