Omega General Help / Re: To all auto drivers
« on: 14 July 2009, 08:49:24 »
I frequently use the 'box manually on automatics, mainly to hold a gear for roundabouts and bends when I don't want any unexpected downchanges in the middle of a turn.  I also do so occasionally for overtaking manoeuvres so that the car is already in the required gear before I begin an overtake, rather than having to kick it down once I have pulled out.

Omega General Help / Re: Brake Upgrade
« on: 23 June 2009, 13:14:08 »
I don't know whether or not Monaro components will fit an Omega, but I thought I'd make you aware that many Monaro owners are less than impressed with the standard Monaro CV8 brakes anyway, and that VXR and AP upgrades are popular.

Check the Monkfish Performance website if you want an idea of prices for the components.

I have standard discs and calipers on my Monaro CV8 with Performance Friction pads (factory pads are not good) which is fine for my needs, though I don't take liberties with them and suspect my Omega would probably perform a better emergency stop.

In summary, if you are going to drive your Omega hard, standard CV8 Monaro brakes are probably not the way to go.

Omega General Help / Re: Head gasket labour time

Thank you all for the input.

A compression test is my intended next step, and if it is narrowed down to the h/g, the cam belt kit will get done too as it is due for replacement in a few thousand miles anyway.

ilovemyelite - I shall drop you a line.

My brother has the car at the moment and is the one who had it checked out; I'll be speaking to the mechanic tomorrow so will have more detail then.

When he checked the car earlier in the week, the engine was warming up and running fine, when the heater then lost warmth due to what appeared to be air in the system.  He carried out a combustion gas check which it failed.  Left to run, the temp gauge keeps rising.

I did have a top hose burst at high speed a short while back and it was probably a minute or two before I saw the temp gauge at max, so I fear this may have been a contributory factor.  The car still appears to run very well but the temp gauge that gets very high after a while, and the heater is erratic.

8-10 if doing both banks....
Thank you; looks promising for getting it fixed then, as it is a decent old thing in other respects.  I feared it might have been an uneconomic repair.

I'm on the Herts/Cambs border.

Presumably an oil cooler problem will result in an oil/water mix; mine has combustion gases in the cooling system - would anything other than the head gasket cause such a problem?

Omega General Help / Head gasket labour time
« on: 23 January 2009, 08:43:59 »
My Omega 2.5 V6 Petrol has been diagnosed with head gasket trouble (combustion gases in the coolant).
I have yet to have a discussion with a suitable spannerman about fixing it, but in the meantime could anyone please give me an idea of how many hours labour involved in h/g replacement?   Many thanks.

Hello and welcome to OOF!  :y

Sounds like a fine mix of Vauxhalls you have there!

If only my 'vx stable' was that good... it consists of:

Omega Elite 3.0 Auto (Current car)
Vectra 1.8 GLS (Which I MUST leave parked up for another year sell *Cough Cough* )
Vectra 2.5 GSI (which im about to break, I MUST get on with it - its been sat a year! And it still bloody starts quicker than the Omega; bar the jump leads!)

Thanks - There's half a dozen altogether!

Thank you to all for the warm welcome.

Newbie Welcome Area / Hello
« on: 11 December 2008, 13:49:03 »
I thought I should pop in and say hello.  I have visited the forum from time to time for some months and found it interesting and helpful, so it is about time I registered!

I have had the Omega for just over a year, and it is part of a Vauxhall stable that includes a Monaro and a Carlton GSi3000.

I live on the border of Herts/Cambs.

General Car Chat / Re: High Octane
« on: 15 June 2009, 13:37:54 »
I use high-octane fuel in all my cars.  From previous experience it has always seemed to make a vehicle run more smoothly and therefore more pleasant to drive, which to me is worth the extra cost.

I also have a few older vehicles that would have to have timing adjustments or octane booster to take the 95 RON.  One of them was tried on premium when it was new and wouldn't pull the skin of a rice pudding, so my opinion of the lower-octane stuff has never been very high.

Most of the time I use Total Excellium for convenience as there is a Total station just outside my village, otherwise I go for Shell or BP.  I did try Esso for a while but found the cars did not run quite as nicely as on the other brands.
