Omega General Help / not firing properly after sulphur & mayo

can someone shed any light please?
i only got the car last week,
had a lot of mayo on oil cap
it was good for 700 miles,
suddenly during short local trip (7 miles) bad sulphur smell & noise like exhaust at back not good, engine not firing properly, the exhaust fumes seem damp, coolant level fine but water very dark,
is it the head gasket, the oil cooler or something completely different
i am a bit of a broke bozo, how easy would it be to DIY with limited knowledge & equipment
