Omega General Help / Re: Sourcing new engine for 2.2 4cyl
« on: 24 March 2009, 16:24:28 »
Ok .... back to Plan A then!

Vauxhall Dealership quoted me circa £650 and two local mechanics came in at £700-800 for HG replacement and skimmed head.

My mate will be a lot cheaper, but just wanted to see what the advice would be on dropping new engine in.

Cheers  :)

Omega General Help / Sourcing new engine for 2.2 4cyl
« on: 24 March 2009, 14:03:10 »
Hi,

Can anybody give me some advice as to where is a good place to get a new engine?

Head gasket is gone (done all checks and had confirmed by several people) and my mate who will do the work for me has suggested that it might be quicker/easier/cheaper to drop a new lump in.

I'm in the Oxford/Banbury area.

Cheers!

I have had a good look at the car this morning with my mate who knows a lot more than me and he reckons it is the HG afterall. I went through all the things above re: HBV and coilpack/plugs and the water test.

Mayo has appeared on filler cap and dipstick, white smoke out of the exhaust, bubbling water in header tank, the empty header tank stinks of petrol.

Trying to get some more sensible quotes now!

Oh, and now the plastic moulding on the side of radiator has sprung a leak which wasn't there before..... any suggestions?

Thanks for all the advice and help from everyone - I was beginning to get really hacked off with this car but think I will fix rather than sell now. :y

Cheers,

Leo

Ians,

Thanks for the advice.

I will get a friend of mine who is much better at tinkering etc. to help me this weekend and have a good look at the HBV to see if I can identify any leaks. If it is a dodgy HBV presumably thats a job I could ask my friend to help me with rather than go to a garage?

With regards the misfiring - I have been round all the electrical connectors I can see and given them a wipe and inserted back in properly, but no luck. Haven't got as as far as coil pack/plugs etc. Will do this weekend.

Compression test? how is that done? Is that a job for mechanic?

Thanks again,

Leo

Hi,

My 2002 Omega has been off the road for a couple of weeks now. My mechanic has told me that the Head Gasket has gone and is quoting me £800 to fix which I can't afford yet so thinking of selling up for bargain price and getting something else. However, I have been advised to post the symptoms here and see if I can get a better idea of what is wrong... so here goes.

Firstly, if it is the HG then is £800 a reasonable figure? I know that HG failure can be misdiagnosed, and I told him this and asked if he was DEFINITELY sure. He still said yes.

Symptoms:

Misfiring on cold starts (back in Nov/Dec) but soon cleared up after 5 mins or so.

I was filling the coolant level up about once every 2 weeks back in November... and this started to get more and more frequent up until the point a few weeks ago where it would take 2 litres a day (by this point just water! no antifreeze).

Back in January, the misfiring got worse and worse and would occur when driving along with a warm engine. The only way to resolve was to pull over, turn off the ignition, and then start up again. Just revving it didn't seem to help.

I can't see any obvious mayo on filler cap or dipstick.

Have had to top up oil a couple of times since November.

Can't see any obvious oil in expansion tank.

Can't see any obvious leaks to explain all the missing water.

The expansion tank does smell of petrol though.

Would head gasket failure account for the misfiring as well as drinking the water?

So thats about it, sorry to be long winded but I am not too hot on mechanics!..... any ideas welcome!

Cheers,

Leo

Hi Entwood,

Where are you suggesting I go? Northampton is only 1/2 hour drive for me.... and about 3 bottles of water lol!

Cheers

Hi Guys.... whoa... quick response!

Should have done this ages ago...  :)

As you have suggested I have posted in the help section.

Hi Welung,

Thanks for the heads up on that..... Is that definitely too much? He said that he would need to send the head off to an engineer to be skimmed and crack tested because it was an aluminium block. Apparently that is why it was so expensive. You guys will know better than me whether he is being truthful or not!

I'm near Banbury/Oxford.

Also, just found out about not being able to post in the for sale section :)

Cheers

Hi All,

I have read through a lot of the pages on here over the past few months since buying an Omega. So thanks to everybody for all of the advice on here, it has been very useful.

However it looks like the head gasket has gone and my mechanic has quoted me £800 to fix. I am simply not prepared to spend that much on it, but I am sure someone better equipped than me with tools/knowledge could sort it for less. Take a look in the 'for sale' section if interested.

Cheers,

Leo

Thanks,

Leo
