My Omega's having a hard day at the MoT Centre. My wallet's taking a bashing as well :'(

Most things are sort of to be expected (ball joint, disc, pads, tire) as she's 14 years old and nearly 200K miles.

The centre pipe is holed, no big issue, but it isn't going to come off the front pipe so I need a front section as well (the bit with the cat(?) in it!). The best the garage can do is a genuine Vauxhall part from Germany (none in the UK apparently) for over £500 (that maybe plus VAT; I was in a state of shock at that point so my ears had shut down at that point). The centre section was ~£116 +VAT.

Basically it looks like a need a whole new exhaust as the back box is not that new either. At something that's maybe approaching £1000 for a complete exhaust what options do I have in terms reasonable quality 3rd party options?

Does anyone have a recommended brand/supplier that can help me out?

I would consider as used front section if anyone has a good one. .

Cheers

Thanks for all the advice.

I've found the "treasure trove" of wires and connectors behind the drivers kick panel. I wouldn't have thought of looking there without being told; so thanks for the tip from 'TheBoy'.

The modulator I'm using is actually the in-line version recommended by 'Dave DND'. I'll give it a go, if it overloads the existing signals I'll swap it for a transmitting one. I've now got some 'Fakra' to DIN connectors so I can insert the modulator I have without cutting the aerial feed and put things back to how they were should I need to.

Any tips on any wires that are suitable switched +12V supplies behind the kick panel? Is there a 0V anywhere or should I just use the chassis?

Cheers

I need DAB/MP3 in my 2001 2.2 DTi Estate, the available FM radio stations are driving me mad  ::)

I'm looking at keeping the existing 4CD/Cassette head unit and adding an aux input via a modulator inserted in to the aerial lead.

Question: Is there an inline connector anywhere between the proprietary 90 degree plug that goes into the back of the head unit cage and the aerial on the roof? Had a look at the head unit yesterday but couldn't see anything before the aerial disappeared behind the glove box. I'd rather not have to cut and re-terminate the lead unless I really have to.

Also what options do I have for easy to get to +12V supplies in the dash to power the modulator and any DAB/MP3 player I decide to use.

Never effectively got the code read as it was not present once the warning light was off  :( Driving to the garage effectively ensured the light would be off by the time I got there. D'oh!

Anyways I've found the cause... Glow plugs! Clearly they had started to fail and I was getting a warning light... The car had been taking a bit longer to start. Came to a head on Monday when it wouldn't start at all. Replaced the glow plugs last night. Starts really easily again and no warning light any more  :)

Looks like all 4 had gone by Monday as they all measured open circuit... Ooops!  :-[

Think I can see why this is happening, but not what's causing it... If you see what I mean.

I'm a bit "blue smokey" after start up. Once it's warm/hot it's as clean as a whistle. I guess I'm getting some smoke through the system that's upsetting the emissions, but this is clearing after a bit and the emissions light's going off. Get the fault codes read tomorrow all being well...

You need to get the codes read. Add your location to your profile, there may be someone local who can do it for you :y

Have updated my profile... I'm in the York\Leeds area if someone has a reader and would like some beer tokens....

Omega General Help / Exhaust Emissions warning light on for 2 minutes
« on: 18 February 2010, 10:03:26 »
Hiya,

I have a 2.2 DTI 16V 51 plate Omega Estate. The Exhaust Emissions warning light (the little picture of the engine) is currently staying illuminated for the first 2 minutes or so of a journey. This clearly isn't right... Any ideas what to do where to look? (It's only been doing it for the last day or so)

I gave it a bit of an Italian Tune Up on the way home last night, but the problem was still there this morning.

One thing that may be connected is that I've seen about a 10% fall in fuel economy over the last couple of months or so. (Low 40s mpg has dropped to high 30s).. I had put this down to the cold weather.... But that may have been a bad call... :(

The ulitmate gearbox oil appears to be

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-832-silkolene-pro-srg-75-full-ester-synthetic-ester-racing-gear-oil.aspx

And for the diff I use BOA90LS, this is officialy for LSD's but the friction modifier appears to help prevent leaks

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-773-silkolene-boa-90-ls-high-performance-gear-and-limited-slip-differential-oil.aspx

Many thanks for the info. Oils ordered. Membership discount to boot  ;D

I've bought some new tie rods and will get my geometry sorted. Camber's been done, but need to go back and get the toe sorted and stop my car turning left all the time...

Looks like I've got a busy weekend ahead as the oil and filter needs a change as well, then there's the brake fluid...... Been an expensive week this week.

Omega General Help / Staggered by a Vauxhall Dealer...
« on: 15 April 2009, 14:22:41 »
I'm almost lost for words..

I went into the local Vauxhall 'stealer' asking for some manual gearbox oil and some diff oil for my 2.2 51 plate diesel mig....

"Oooh" came the reply, with a sucking of the teeth. "That's normally done through the workshop, I've not sold gearbox oil to a customer in 5 years"

'Oh', says I. 'here's my reg number can you tell me the part number for the stuff I need as I don't want to mix the wrong types together...'

"sorry, son" came the reply "our system doesn't tell us that. What gearbox do you have?"

'Eh?' says I, 'can't you tell from the , reg, chassis number etc.'

"Erm, no" came the reply.

'It's a 5 speed manual one as it's a 2.2 diesel' Says I.

"They do different ones you know"

'Hmm', was all I could say.

Is it me? Or should this be a really simple question to answer?...

So after 10 mintes, my old Haynes manual and the handbook for god's sake

This is what he came up with

Part: 93165388 Diff Oil at a staggering £40+ per litre!
Part: 93165290 gearbox oil at ~£4 per litre

Are these even remotely close to what I need?

So some specific questions:

Do I need the specific manual gearbox oil recommended by Vauxhall to change the oil?
If so what is it?
How much do the box take? 1L?

Do I need to flush it (by draining, filling to the fill hole with the new oil. driving, draining and then filling to the fill level (9mm below the fill hole)) as described in Haynes; or can I just drain and fill?

What diff oil do I need?
Is it really £40 a litre for the Vx stuff?

Finally, track rod adjuster 'tubes'. Are they available on their own or will I need the two ball joints and the tube thing in the middle as one item? Mine's seized on both sides and I need the tracking sorting.  :-/

Omega General Help / 4 wheel alignment angles: CD Estate
« on: 15 April 2009, 09:51:49 »
Morning guys,
I'm looking to get a 4 wheel alignment done on my 51 plate 2.2 Diesel Estate as it's pulling to the left and is wearing the inside of the OSF. I see there some talk of revised geometry settings for the not so new cars where the suspension is not quite as fresh as it was when new...

I have a question.. (I'm assuming these settings apply to the estate as well as the saloon)

Here are the settings from the forum
Front toe (In)            +0 deg 5'
Rear toe (In)            +0 deg 10'
Front camber (-ve)       -1 deg 10'

Any changes to the rear camber (- 1 deg 40'?)  or is this not adjustable anyway?

Cheers

Spike.
