Thanks Andy and Ghost for your help. Will it cause a problem to leave the sensor unplugged?

whereabouts is the bonnet sensor and what does it look like? How can I tell its faulty? Should the float in the header tank be bobbing about the water?  I know very little about cars as you can probably guess!

Omega General Help / Dodgy Key, Coolant Level and alarm probs!!!
« on: 23 August 2009, 13:26:08 »
My first problem is my spare key (older type fob) doesn't work properly. It won't operate the central locking from the fob, the light comes on when you press the button but nothing happens. Even with the main key you have to be right on top of the car before it unlocks. I guess that might just be the battery.  The alarm seems to be playing up aswell, it just goes off for know apparent reason! Is there a simple way of just disconnecting it? Last but not least....I keep getting the "brake light check" and "coolant level check" warnings but my brake lights are working fine and the coolant level isn't low????? Can someone also tell with normal running (not sitting in traffic) what the temp guage should read. Mine sits about 95 degrees, is that right?  Any help is always much appreciated.

Omega General Help / Re: Intermittant power steering
« on: 11 August 2009, 17:52:03 »
I'm having the same trouble with the pas and mine is also really noisy when i'm on a hard lock.  Ive looked new pumps on ebay but from what I can make out there are a number of different ones.

My SAI pump is knackered plus the cambelt will need changing as I don't know when it was last done so maybe could combine all the jobs together. Ive had a look on ebay for the power steering pumps but they're all from cars with auto boxes, does it matter?

Omega General Help / Power Steering Problem
« on: 14 June 2009, 12:40:03 »
When i'm parking up and have the steering on a hard lock its very noisey. The steering also becomes very heavy at the same time but returns to normal once i'm on the move. The power steering level had been very low but its been refilled but the fault is happening almost all the time now. I'm guessing the pump is on the way out or maybe a knackered rack????

how can i tell if the cat is on its last legs?  Wouldn't the exhaust place have spotted it??

Now Ive finally got the misfire ( a new bosch dispac supplied and fitted for £150 fixed the fault) sorted out im moving to the other probs!  When I start the car it always takes a couple of seconds to fire up and when its running you get a sound not unlike a washing machine on a spin.  The noise stops after about a minute. The exhaust sounds a bit throaty and when you rev it up and it has a little rattle when it gets hot. I had the centre boxes replaced as advised by a local exhaust place but they didn't think anything else needed doing. Ive read on here about the problems attributed to the EGR so I wondered if this maybe the issue.  I'd be grateful of any advice. Thanks

The dispac not going be sorted out until Tuesday now unless I want to pay £130 for an after market replacement (available now) rather than £95 for the Bosch version. The old one is apparently in poor condition with lots of cracks.  I'm still not sure that this will be the end of my troubles, my previous experience of driving a car with a misfire (vw golf) was every now and then it would be a little hesistant when accelerating and things like that. Whereas with the Omega it does this plus it sounds like a tank when accelerating and the idle is a bit erratic.  Ive heard the EGR valve can cause some of these symptoms aswell.  Any thoughts guys?

Omega General Help / Wasted My Money!
« on: 21 May 2009, 22:08:51 »
I'm feeling very annoyed with myself, after paying to get the rocker cover gasket, plugs and leads replaced last week and now the dispac (£95 for the dispac and £50 to fit) it turns out that the gasket was actually ok!!!!  I bought the car thinking the gasket leak and associated probs were the cause of my misfire so I bought the bits and got them fitted. And guess what....it still misfired!  The mechanic showed me the old bits and I thought the plugs were brown with oil but apparently it was just they were really old and knackered. This has only come to light today when I enquired whether he'd cleaned the plug wells and he told me they were bone dry. He said he told me this last week so not sure why I wasn't annoyed then! Its my own fault as I went with what the previous owner was told rather than getting it checked it out first. I don't know how much cheaper it would of been just having the plugs and leads changed but I only paid £90 labour which I didn't think was too bad considering he changed the gaskets aswell. The only consolation is that its now (hopefully) I job I won't have to have done again. I'm just praying that the new dispac solves the prob, the old one was cracked.

Omega General Help / Re: Do I need a new dispac????
« on: 18 May 2009, 21:00:46 »
Thanks for the advice guys.  I know absolutely nothing about mechanics so I have to get the work at a garage. Vaux couldn't give me a definitive answer as to which dispac I have which is annoying as I'd hoped to source the part myself and have it ready for the mechanic. Ebay had them from £40 but my local motor factors place they start at £70 + vat!  I don't think the garage will want the car hanging about whilst I wait for the part to arrive.....As far as the misfire itself is concerned, could anything else be to blame other than the dispac, plugs and leads? From what the previous owner said the fault came on all of a sudden, very much like the situation like somebody else has posted on the forum recently.

Are there any other areas worth checking that may cause the misfire other than the dispac? The garage did a compression test when they changed the plugs and leads and everything was okay. I'm assuming the misfire will affect the fuel economy as my car seems very very juicy!

Am I right in thinking the dispac I'll need is Vaux part no. 90511450?
