Omega General Help / Re: Head Gasket failure 2.5 V6
« on: 22 July 2011, 23:36:05 »
The block is still there but has discoloured.

This head is from the passenger side; is the driver's side much more difficult to get out? as so far this has taken nearly two days  :o

Any idea what the gasket is made of as that appears to have rusted also.... but it may just be super brittle and flaky fiber.

Omega General Help / Head Gasket failure 2.5 V6
« on: 22 July 2011, 22:56:37 »
Hi guys,
I've been losing small amounts of coolant for months, I read the head gasket failure on the V6 was very rare so I kept looking for other causes, then suddenly the coolant bridge started to leak big time, I fixed this and the big leak stopped but the small one continued but got worse over a couple of week so I decided to look at the head gasket, which appeared in terrible condition, see photos, is this usual? What could have caused it and will the other gasket be in the same type of poor condition?  :-/

When I was first looking for a leak I had a hose pouring water into the cabin air intake area, the scuttle valve coped.
When I say the passenger footwell fills with water I really mean you have to push down on it some clear, clean water comes up through the two holes for the mat, the only time there was puddle of water was when I drove down to Munich on a humid August day, I had a cardboard box sitting on the mat in the rear near side passenger footwell and the box was unusable when I got there.
If I look under the car on a humid day with the aircon on there is a constant dribble of water from the two pipes on either side of the transmission, I was wondering if driving at motorway speeds somehow causes the drain to stop working ( maybe due to the air under the car being higher pressure than that at the air intake??) this causes the condensation to overflow around the evaporator.

4
There is no doubt that this is related to the AirCon, I get it re-gassed each year in July and it usually works till October, it's only during these months that the front passenger footwell and the near side rear passenger footwell get wet under the mats, so throughout the rest of the year when the aircon no longer works it does not get wet no matter how much rain falls.

I've still got this issue. I had a further look and the two discharge pipes originate from the heater matrix but I can't think why the heater matrix would need drainage pipes, it's the Evaporator which needs them to get rid of the condensation that will form there.
On another website someone said it was a know issue and to look at ''VX Field Remedy (No 1390)', not sure what that means  :-?

In the summer on a humid day there will be an almost constant dribble out of both hoses when on a flat surface.

My Omega is a manual.

What makes you think these two hoses are condensate drains? Is yours an Auto? if so could one of them possibly be the gearbox breather pipe? :-/

Gave that a try before I got the air-con re-gassed and the floor was dry.

I wonder why there are two hoses for the condensate to come from, one on each side of the 'driveshaft' if they originate from the Evaporator which is located behind the glove compartment?

Unlikely to be coolant then. Get the car somewhere dry and run a hose over the sunroof but keep it from running down the windscreen.

If the water level goes up then it'll be a sunroof drain.

Yes! Actaully I'm losing about a cup full a week!
But after a day long journey the footwell had about 1 litre of water in it ( the water is oderless and colourless).

Cavman, are you losing any coolant? Do you need to top up the coolant expansion bottle at all?   :-?

Thanks for the quick responce! That was the first thing I checked after readin this forum last year. The car has no problems in the rain or car wash etc... just when the air-con is used.

Can I get to the heater matrix without taking out the dash board? I guess that will also mean dis-charging the air con :-(
I'd like to find out where those two discharge pipes originate.

Check the passenger side Scuttle Drain. It will probably be full of leaves, water & other crap. :y

Failing that, you could have a problem with your Heater Matrix leaking :-/

Omega General Help / Puddle in Passenger footwell (must be Air Con)
« on: 18 October 2010, 14:27:59 »
(Vauxhall Omega 2.5 (petrol)  CDX Salon)

I’ve got water collecting in the front passenger and near side rear passenger footwell, the water is defiantly connected with the Air conditioning, I had this problem 18 months ago and stopped using the air con and the problem went away but as the summer hols came I thought I’d try using the air con again ( I had to get the system re-gassed as I’d not used it in so long) anyway, after the air-con started working again I drove to Munich in dry weather and by the time I got there there was a puddle in the passenger footwell.

There are two tubes that drain off the evaporate from the air-con, one on each side of the ‘driveshaft’, these are both working on a flat surface, does anyone know where these tubes start? Do they run from inside the dash board? I’m guessing that some of the ‘evaporate’ is leaking behind the dash.

Omega General Help / Re: Water ,Rain ingress

I’ve got this issue and after much head scratching I’m convinced it’s evaporate from the Air-Con.
When I’ve got the Air-Con on, the evaporate usually runs out of two pipes, one either side of the driveshaft near the gearbox, on a humid day there is quite a lot.
I took up the carpet ect… and dried it out, I then drove in the height of summer to Austria, during which no rain fell by the time I got there the passenger foot-well was soaked in water.

Omega General Help / Re: Car stalling dangerously
« on: 16 July 2010, 09:07:20 »
Got a new after-market MAF yesterday, fitted it (5 mins), so far the car seems fine!

Now wondering whether to re-fit the Bosch Idle Control Valve I replaced as part of my investigation with a £30 after-market one I got off e-bay, Vauxhall wanted £230 for a new one :o

I was surprised the MAF failed, it's got no moving parts and has clean air passing over it.

Thanks for your help guys  :y

I took the car for a spin over lunch. I disconnected the MAF sensor and apart from the engine light on the dash coming on the car performance was the same:
OK during warm up but stalling when slowing down and using the clutch.

I'm in St Albans.

The Engine idles about 900 RPM (air con on).
When idling the RPM needle can dance about, dipping down to around 500 momentarily then surging up to 1300, then back down to 500, it may do this a few times before undershooting 500 and stalling.

I did the pin test and got code 73 (Mass Air Flow Sensor Voltage Low)

Omega General Help / Car stalling dangerously

Hi!
During the recent hot weather my petrol omega 2.5 CDX (1998) has often stalled when slowing down for a roundabout or tuning a corner, which is scary as I of course loose power steering and the brake servo….

I’ve replaced the Idle Control Value but this has not fixed the problem. The problem does not occur when the engine is warming up or when the air temperature is under about 25 Celsius, I need to drive to Bavaria in a few weeks where the temperature is often above 25 C  :o so I’m keen to get to the bottom of this soon. I’ve not made any changes to the car recently and not noticed any other strange behavior.

Any idea what could be causing this?

Cheers.
