Windows 11
I haven't actually seen Windows 11 in the wild yet. Last time I had the 'pleasure' of working on a Microsoft PC was back in February and that was still running Windows 10.
The comments I have seen about Windows 11 make it sound like Windows 10 with added adverts. Is that a good summary? or is it worse than that?

Stripped the water pump off the Carlton today to see if it was one of the inferior plastic impeller versions
It was not so now wondering what else it could be for it to still be getting to hot. Head gasket done, stat removed and rad flushed with neat uric acid
Also attempted to remove both front calipers as they are "sticky" to send to Biggred for rebuilding
Could only find one brake pipe clamp and one caliper retaining bolt would not budge
Plenty of Ambersil penertrant around it and give it another go next week
10 to 1 you have done it but have you checked the cooling fan is doing its job properly

Has a viscous Rae and it’s all working fine.   Ahh yes that’s why I asked those viscous fans can be problematic 👍👍 and ferocious sometimes too ::)
My brother had a 6 cylinder Rover SD1 back in the 1980s - the hub on his viscous fan seized so that the fan ran at engine rpm.
It sounded like a jet engine (and made the fuel consumption even worse than normal) until the day that it threw a fan blade.
He was lucky, the blade didn't cause any damage.....

Omega General Help / Re: 1995 2.5 V6 Omega Clutch Query
« on: 01 November 2024, 19:15:07 »
Thank you Doctor Gollum for your reply. The hydraulics have definitely failed as when I pump the clutch pedal I get clutch/brake fluid dripping out of the gearbox. LUK do a kit with a release bearing and a kit with a slave cylinder for my car. From what you say I guess the one with the slave cylinder contains the release bearing as part of the slave cylinder.
My 94 2.5 did that.
There is a flexi hose with a piece of rigid pipe that screws into the side of the slave cylinder (inside the bell housing). The flexi hose had failed. Can't remember if it was possible to diagnose before I pulled the gearbox.

And presumably it's the bracket that determines the position rather than the sensor ::)
Eh?
Front left/front right/rear... All same sensor but different bracket to suit location. ;)
Yes, very likely, but the engineering numbers (on the actual sensor) looked different, although that could be an oddity with EPC and my VIN going by DTM's reply above.

Unclear how easy it would be to remove from bracket, as in amongst the heavy corrosion on my screws, there were signs of thread lock.  The thread is a cylindrical brass insert in the plastic of the sensor, so reliant on thread lock breaking before the insert spins in the plastic.  And heat wouldn't be an option.  At £160, bit pricey to take a punt, so you'd get the right one, even though its considerably more expensive than the other side.
If they are on the CAN bus it might be coded differently. Pointless but who knows what the designers were smoking?

British Gas
Sent me an (outrageously inflated >:() estimated gas meter reading while I was out of the country. I sent them an actual reading as soon as I was able to. The reading was rejected. >:(

BG then switched to a 'new system' and finalised the accounts on the old system using the inflated estimate. >:(

I have had multiple phone calls with the BG call centre. They can see what the problem is but they don't have access to the old system and each time promise to get someone with access to the old system to fix it. EVERY TIME they promise yet it still isn't fixed. >:(

In the forlorn hope that smart meters might prevent future problems I agreed to have smart meters fitted (the meters needed replacing anyway due to their age). First appointment I waited all afternoon but no show. Second appointment he fitted the meters but couldn't get a signal so left me with dumb meters. The only positive was that a BG employee had taken an actual reading (took the whole bloody meter). Left me with the recommendation that I call BG and ask for a 'Mesh + T2' module to get the comms working. FFS  :(

Phoned BG for an appointment to fit a 'Mesh + T2' module. 'I can't do that, we need to wait 28 days for the readings to come through'. But you won't get any readings without comms!!!!!!!!!!! Gave up. Put a reminder in my diary.

A few days later the electricity meter connected to the network. Not sure when exactly as I wasn't given a display  :-\

After 28 days I called again. 'Sorry, don't have any appointments available, can you call back in two weeks?'

Two weeks later I called & got an appointment for Monday (yesterday). Different installer turned up. I explained about the lack of signal. 'I've got a signal' he says and proceeds to work through the configuration process.

I now have functioning smart meters for electricity and gas  :) It has been pissing down with rain for days, wondering if they will carry on working if the rain stops..............

Today I tried to contact BG about the estimated reading (and failed) so I paid for the actual usage & didn't pay the extra £500. I suppose will need to spend another hour on the phone tomorrow  :( trying to get resolution  >:(

Omega General Help / Re: Monroe Levelling System
« on: 30 June 2024, 14:17:56 »
On the GM air-assisted self levelling suspension the road springs provide some roll resistance and the anti-roll bar provides some more.

I doubt that the air pipe was intended to restrict the air flow. It would be downright dangerous to go into a long, sweeping corner with a car that was planted and discover half way round that the roll resistance had gone.

I wonder if the roll bar on self levelling cars is stiffer than the roll bars on normally sprung cars to compensate for the loss of roll resistance with softer springs?

Where were you starting from? Junction 10 on the M25 is a shit show at the moment and that's on top of the usual BS.

Gatwick allows 2 hours free parking in the long stay. :-X
The only reasons to park in the short stay are ignorance or laziness.

ULEZ is an utter scam but it's almost impossible to avoid if your going inside the M25.

That was an expensive coffee, good luck getting it overturned  :-\
Perhaps add - "crap information from Gatwick regarding the parking options" to the list then.
I assume that I would have had to convey 3 suitcases, that were near the 30kg weight allowance, from the car to a bus stop and then wait for a bus. I didn't find that information on line - Gatwick seemed to be keen to tout the benefit of parking in the short stay car park over pausing in the drop off zone.

- Gatwick short stay car park
- ULEZ
- Local parking schemes

Delivered my family to Gatwick in the Galaxy on Tuesday then went on to see an old schoolfriend in Twickenham, stayed overnight then drove back to Cornwall on Wednesday.

Endured the usual crawl along on the M25 & M23. Unusually the outside temperature was 29 degrees and the aircon has stopped working. It was a special treat to find that the car park was designed around the Austin 7 and I had to wind round 4 floors until I could find a space that I could get into AND open the tailgate to get the suitcases out. The only positive was that I didn't leave any paint on the concrete columns (unlike 100s of people before me judging by the scars on the columns). I thought 14.40 for an hour was a bit steep but consoled myself with the knowledge that a meal and refreshments were waiting for me

Got pinged twice for ULEZ - I haven't driven a car into London for years so that came as a genuine unpleasant surprise. (2x 12.50)

The final stinger was the local parking scheme. If I had set off before 10am I would have been away and free but I stayed for coffee. My friend logged in to pay for my parking - the payment didn't work. After multiple failed attempts I went to leave an hour later and found a 110 pound penalty charge on the screen. Don't know when it was attached, the car was right in front of the house and we were just inside with all the doors & windows open >:(.

Omega General Help / Re: Flickering oil pressure light
« on: 27 June 2024, 02:34:15 »
Bloody silly design of the strainer - it is like a ball with the mesh in the centre of the ball and a smallish hole in the bottom to let the oil in from the sump.
If anything does reach the mesh it stays there. Changing the oil will give you a sump foil of clean oil (and a false sense of security) but does nothing for the crap wedged in the strainer

Is there a spring loaded arm supporting the tensioner pulley? Is it loose/bent/shagged in some other way?

Spring tension correct?

Is it a Diesel?/ is the freewheel on the alternator pulley working? (only applies to Diesels AFAIK)

;D Tenth trip there since the beginning of April  ::)

Ta, local factors has a belt in stock, but it's probably going to be prudent to go through the cooling system as I almost boiled it :-[
why did the belt shred?

My phone via it's headphone socket >:D

Bluetooth happily connects to the car for telephone purposes, but not streaming, so 3.5mm jack into RCA plugs straight into the head unit. The car side also has a video input, although that's a moot point as it already has a dvd changer.

It's another thing to code into the head unit, but it's an official retrofit so no Biggie.

Ultimately Spotify an YouTube are significantly better than any DAB/DVB offerings so won't be retrofitting either, and I refuse to fit some hacky chinesey shite into anything.

What age is the Galaxy? A simple HU upgrade could solve the issue... Sony XAV 8050 or similar would tick all your boxes if you've a suitable Din sized hole.
2008.
The Galaxy, S-Max and Mondeo all came with double DIN Sony head units with an oval face. I could pick up the MP3 variant for around £50 but I won't be keeping it long enough to make it worthwhile.

Ran a new loom from the Comand module to the glovebox on the proper car as part of the ongoing retrofit projects.

Only a little thing, but as the car is of a certain age, whilst it has Bluetooth, it doesn't allow for music streaming so a more traditional plug and play solution was required. Fortunately it was a retrofit option and the genuine looms are readily available at reasonable prices... A working solution for less than £50 using genuine bits rather than trying to stuff a Chinese Android into it. >:D
What are you going to plug into it / use a source?

I carry a USB stick with talking books recorded onto it. My girls are at an age where they can listen for hours to Enid Blyton but cannot sit still for more than 20 minutes without fighting otherwise.

In most newish cars & hire cars I can play from a USB stick but my Galaxy is a little too old. I had the bright idea of plugging my phone into the aux socket but that didn't work because my phone doesn't have a 3.5mm earphone socket. Next plan was to use Bluetooth but the installed (Nokia CK7W) adapter only supports mono/phone mode.

My daughter has a little pink MP3 player - the user interface is painful but it will have to do for now...........

Fitted a new battery to the Galaxy's power sounder yesterday. Really struggled to get enough heat into the solder to get the old battery legs out of the circuit board cleanly. I then noticed that there was corrosion on the board that I hadn't noticed before so gave it as good a clean as I could before putting back together but not confident it would work.

Today had a pig of a job getting a socket to fit the swollen wheel nuts. Got the wheel off, wheelarch liner out & power sounder fitted. Power sounder popped the fuse straight away  >:(

Took the power sounder back out and binned it.

Assembly is the reverse of disassembly....... but I couldn't get the socket off the wheel nuts. The worst one took 45 minutes. Finished up cutting off the stainless steel covers so one wheel now needs a 20mm socket to get the nuts off.
