Omega General Help / Re: Hot, oily smell ........
« on: 18 February 2010, 15:17:53 »
My V6 auto is currently in dock following recovery yesterday. It developed a very loud rattle from beneath the cambelt cover while I was on holiday and the AA sensibly stretchered it on a low loader 100 miles to my local dealer.

Unrelated to this fairly obvious fault in the last couple of weeks I had occasionally noticed a 'hot oil' with a touch of rubber smell after short journeys. Engine temperatures were all normal and I could not find the cause.
I have just been told by the dealer that I have a small leak from the diff that is running onto the exhaust (in addition to the front end issue). The diff seems fine so they are just changing the seal but it may explain the occasional 'hot oil' smell on my car.
My only qualm is that I noticed it more at the nearside front than rear of the car.....

Consider yourself lucky, I wrote off a new Volvo V70 hitting a Stag at night. We went back next day to collect it & had venison for several weeks

An accountant mate of mine killed a deer in the early hours doing quite a lot of front end damage. Not knowing what procedure to follow he loaded it into the back of his estate and took it to the local police station. They tut tutted, told him to leave the matter in their hands and that they would dispose of the carcass.
Did I mention that he was a vegetarian?

Omega General Help / Re: wandering around on bad road surfaces
« on: 22 December 2009, 11:26:29 »
I first had this a few months ago and assumed tyre pressures or some other fault and had the steering carefully examined with no result.
I have now discovered that this only happens on one particular stretch of tarmac a few hundred yards long, regrettably it's near my house so I use it a lot. The lane doesn't look different but clearly it's been damaged by heavy vehicles. The issue doesn't affect our other cars so it's seems related to the wheel track and possibly the fatter tyres on the 2.5 .

It could just be the road at fault in which case all you can do is make a note of the dodgy bits and try to adapt. It still irritates me though.

Guitars and drums and other JUNK!!!?? I don't think so, I have this type of "Junk".  ;D
Hi, and welcome to the forum Tim

I forgot 'junk' is a reserved word in our house that translates as valuable possessions. The stuff we throw out is 'trash', as in 'good trash' - recyclable things or 'bad trash' - landfill. Hence the regular Tuesday morning question about which bin to put out 'Is it good trash or bad trash day?' :-?

I've just discovered this forum. So much to read.
I've had my Omega estate for almost 10 years, since nearly new. (Ex Vauxhall management with 2000 on the clock). For 6 months it had recurrent alarm faults that drove me mad and resulted in lots of warranty action at the dealer. My guess is this is why it didn't get used much before I bought it.
Suddenly it fixed itself, the mechanics didn't do anything different, and I've had no trouble since except a single fuse blowing and a rear light bulb failure at different times. Other than that it has been totally reliable.
It is by far the best car that I have ever used, the performance is good, it's very comfortable and it can carry surprisingly big loads when the back is flat. I wish they still made new ones, although this one is carefully maintained and still going strong so looks good for a few years yet.
My family love the car and as the kids have learned to drive they have asked leading questions like 'Are you going to change your car soon?' or 'How much is it for me to go on your insurance?' They don't want a hot hatch they want my Omega so they can move their guitars and drums and other junk.
