Just wondered what temperature my guage should show. It has shown about 87 since I owned the vehicle. It just crossed my mind that the stat could be stuck open and its running cold.
What should it show please?

Just realised that I hadn't given you guys an update...
Its all done and dusted! Yes, the bearings had gone in the water pump so the diagnosis was correct. I had a little problem in that I got hold of the wrong replacement pump - QCP3058 which is suitable for the 2.0 8V, and not 16V
Also, it looked like one of the cam pulleys was 1 tooth out - it's not now and runs better than before
So, many, many thanks everyone, its much appreciated. Oh, and if anyone wants a QCP3058 equiv MCP3058 (fitted, not used and removed immediately) then message me. £10 inc postage.

Adjust them and they are perfectly good!
Fit a galvanised chassis.
Fix it and then blast, dip and galv your bulkhead.
Put on a coat, or stop being a pansy.
Oh, and then keep grinning at £100pa insurance and no road tax

So the big pulley at the bottom is what? Crank shaft I presume then to drive the rest? *face slap moment*!

Sorry guys, I am having trouble identifying the parts required. How do I tell if I have an X20XEV? It is an 'N' reg car.
Can anyone give me the part numbers for...

Also, Haynes mentions a tensioner on the aux belt - but I can't spot it. I took a pic but can't upload it. But going clockwise from 6 oclock position, I have a big pulley (leak is from behind here and I believe this is the water pump). Then at 10oclock it the alternator, at 3 o clock is the PS pump, but there is a small pulley at about 5 oclock, between the PS pump and water pump. What is this? The tensioner? If so, I can't see how it adjusts to give slack.
Very sorry about this. I am rebuild an old 72 series 3 Landy and am happy working on that, but I know very little about this car which was bought as an old banger runabout.
As always, I appreciate the help - and please accept my apologies for the numpty questions!

My Omega is losing water fast and badly! It appears to be coming from around the vicinity of the bottom pulley (2 litre engine). I assume, unless someone hints otherwise, that either the water pump gasket or water pump are at fault.
I have the haynes book of lies but tbh its not helping much. So, is my diagnosis likely, and if so, how much of a job would this be please.
Also, while I am here, both front doors, but passenger especially seems to very suddenly be very rusty just below the bottom hingers, and the doors have started creaking on their hinges - is imminent collapse on the cards... :-/

thanks guys. A chap on another forum just suggested the same. My FIL has just arrived so he is gonna give me a lift and I will stick the old key right next to the new to see if it works... fingers crossed!

Yes I did refit the immobiliser thingy, (but I suppose It would be wise to doubl;e check it. The key has no chip, it is a replacement key that came with the barrel.
I will try that paper clip test when I can get back to the car (probably not today).

Omega General Help / Not starting, diagnosis help required

Hi all, I have a problem with my new to me Omega. It will not start (but will turn over) and indeed the engine does not catch at all.
Symptoms:
Just fixed faulty ignition by changing the barrel (old one broke up). New one 'works' in that positions I, II and III all behave as they should, the engine turns but doesn't start.
On the dash, a warning light that is an 'engine with lightning bolt in it' is flashing. I assume this means engine electrics.
I currently cannot get the plugs out to check them as they are in so deeply I can't get any plug spanner I have on to them. However, the rubber cap of one of them dripped oil! I wiped it clean, and with tissue paper cleaned oil out from round the plug. After retrying to start it and checking again, there is more oil around the plug :-(
It is a 2.0 16v DOHC engine, the cam shafts are high... higher that the recessed plugs. So perhaps a seal failing on the cover, although no oil can be seen other than around the foot of the plug and cap?
Head gasket gone? If it has, could this allow oil to get around the plug?
Piston Rings failed? Would it pressurise oil and force it past the plug?
As I said, the car is new to me, so I don't know my way around it yet, the plugs and caps WERE ok around a week or two ago as I had the caps off to dry up water that had surrounded them. Mmmm, thinking again, I assumed the PO had washed the engine for me and soaked it... but could this also have been coolant from a failed head gasket?? The car is currently abandoned in the yard of a friend where it failed about 2 miles from me. I can't get up there and back with loads of tools :-( When the weather improves, I can try and get it towed back, but we live rurally and have no transport at all.
