Yes, you have a vacuum leak which will most likely effect emissions.

Thank you for the confirmation, that gives me hope that once I've dealt with the leak I may have an easier time with this years MOT.

All I know at the moment is that its the top pipe as I look down on the part from above so I'm tyring to learn more. I did read that about the torque curve, etc, but will this part being broken have any affect on emmissions?

So, is it the actual actuator bit you've bust - the bit with the electrical connector? Or that actual valve?

The actuator vac feed pipe can get knocked, which breaks them clean off.  This actuator is connected to the valve via a ball and socket rod, which I'm not sure I've ever seen one break.

99% certain that both actuators are the same, and if not physically damaged, tend to be reliable, so one from a breaker should be fine to use.

This is the part that is broken, perhaps I should have called it the valve solenoid? Its located on the back of the air intake pipes as shown in pic 17.4 4A.23 of Haynes - the top pipe connection has snapped off. I think the part number for it is 90466214. I found it by chance so have no idea how long its been broken or how it happened but I'm surprised I haven't noticed a difference in performance. From what I've read I believe this part being broken may affect fuel ecomomy/ consumption and if this is correct I'd be particularly grateful for confirmation that this in turn may have a affect on exhaust emissions due to the problem I mentioned in my first post.

There's a guide as to how it works and what to expect. Might be in the FAQs

Have looked again under 'switchover guide' and got various hits but can't find a guide or anything that answers my specific questions.

Omega General Help / Switchover valve
« on: 26 January 2025, 13:00:50 »
I've recently found that the intake duct switchover valve on my 2.5 V6 is broken, the top pipe connection having snapped off. I have no idea how this happened or how long its been broken but the break doesn't look like a fresh one. This is not a part I've had experience of previously but after having looked on here and in Haynes I now have a rough idea what it does. My questions are: 1) is it easy to replace? - sounds simple enough in Haynes; and 2), what affect will/ should this break have on the performance of the vehicle?

My reason for question 2) is that I've noticed no difference in the running of the vehicle so I'm curious to learn what difference replacing the unit should make? If I'm understanding what I've read I would expect a faulty unit to lead to a loss of power and worse fuel consumption - is this correct and would it also have an affect on exhaust emissions? I had trouble getting through last years MOT due to exhaust emissions (high in CO2 if memory serves, but it finally passed after a lot of revving) and am wondering if this faulty unit may have played a part in that.

Thanks for in advance any replies given.

If it drops below 10V on cranking then the battery is fobard

That's what I was thinking, but I wasn't sure if an earthing issue could also cause this? I've never had car a battery before that seems to hold charge ok but loses a lot when the engine is turned over. The battery is old, and previously from my SIII land Rover, so it gould be a bad cell or cells but it's still holding 12.52V across the terminals and it hasn't been used for two weeks so outwardly it appears ok. Hooking ther car to a donor battery as if jump starting does seem to give it an extra boost, so again that suggests the old battery, but just trying to eliminate any earthing issues before buying a new one and so far have only been able to find a few small earth straps just below the fuse box and one much larger one attached to the engine lower down on the same side.

Also check the 0v straps from engine to chassis for corrosion.

Are these braided straps and where are these located on the V6 please? I've been under the car and cannot find any braided straps unless I'm being blind or completely missed them. I did locate the big brown earth from the battery to the engine block and gave that a good clean. I'm starting to wonder if the fault is just the battery - it seems to hold a charge ok but there seems to be a big drop in voltage when the ignition key is turned, to 9v, 8v and sometimes as low as 7v. But then again I guess a bad earth could cause this. The starter has been reconditioned and has a new solonoid so I've no reason to suspect that.

Also check the 0v straps from engine to chassis for corrosion.

Otherwise, if it clicks, most likely starter solenoid, if it doesn't, ignition switch or range switch.

Thanks, I'll have a look at the straps.

As mentioned, the starter has just been overhauled and had a new solenoid fitted so I'm hoping/ assuming it is ok if the job has been done properly (a well established local company with a good reputation did the work so I've no reason to suspect otherwise.

Pause between each step when turning the key.

If you just slam it straight to start it skips.

Long term fix is probably a new ignition switch.

Thanks, I'll try that next time and see what happens.

Omega General Help / Starting issue
« on: 07 July 2024, 11:03:23 »
Hi Folks,
I've been experiencing an inconsistent starting issue with my 1996 V6 recently and would be grateful for any advice given.

Sometimes it starts up with no problems but on other occasions when I turn the key I can get either nothing happening or at best a 'click', which I've assumed was coming from the starter solenoid. I thought this was most probably due to the starter playing up so I removed it and had it refurbished by a local company - new brushes and a new solenoid were fittted. I did test it off the car before giving it to them and it did turn over at the time, but pretty slowly, so as it was off the car and was the original unit I thought reconditioning wouldn't hurt.

When I got it back and refitted it the car started immediately and has been fine for two or three weeks since then. On Thursday, however, I had the same thing happen again - either nothing at all when the key was turned or at best a click. It did eventually start so I got home ok, and its been fine on the few occasions I've used it since then but it seems there is still a problem somewhere.

Any suggestions and advice would be much appreciated.

Omega General Help / Re: Handbrake cable
« on: 22 February 2023, 18:34:15 »
yes i saw that too.
unfortunately it doesnt mention which side the longer one goes to !  but seeing as your problem only began after a new cable was fitted it is a good place to start.

Pretty confident this could resolve my issue - I'm hoping Geoff has laid the cable out as it should be on the car with the longer length being on the passenger side. At least I've got something worth checking now and can see what my lengths are when I remove the cable.

This may have already been mentioned earlier in the thread, but do they both have the same part number ?
If not then there has to be a difference.
It's an assembly the compensator with N/S & O/S  cables fitted  ;)

Looking at spec (on ebay listings ) the cable appears to be the same length BOTH sides 1550mm 1550mm

the 15MM difference on my BRAND NEW cable  may be a manufacturing defect  :-\
It's a QH aftermarket cable ,15mm over 1550mm is 1%
that said , maybe the OP has a similar manufacturing defect  :-\
or the cable HAS stretched one side  :-\
or it's NOT fitted or adjusted correctly  :-\

$19.50 EBAY
£32.30 ebay clicky

sorry to mislead , but the cable I have spare IS 15mm difference
(I laid it flat ,tight on the floor ,see saw level )

I've now found an article on here by geoffr70 that seems to answer the question and confirms what some have said above in this post about the lengths being different. Geoff has posted a picture of the cables which shows them to be different lengths and clearly notes this in the second paragraph of section 10 where he also advises getting it right first time. Here's the link to his article: https://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=102410.0

at the end of theday its easy enough to dissconnect the cable and reverse it

I agree, just wanted to make sure I was on the right track before starting in case there was no difference in the cable lengths.

Just compared a brand new QH branded omega /carlton cable from my hoard  :-X
one sides cable is 15mm longer ,get it the wrong way round on the car and that doubles the difference (30mm ish)

That is very interesting and would probably be enough to explain my issues and why the compensator bar doesn't sit nicely when adjusted. If this is deliberate and not just inconsistent manufacturing I'm surprised there's not a lot of info saying which side to fit the longer length to.
