Well she went in for timing last night and was 3 teeth out!!

Runs and drives perfect again, although we did notice the dreaded manifold sheared bolt has appeared, grrr.

Thanks to all who offered advice.  :y

Need to get hold of a cambelt and aux belt, can anyone advise of the best place to get them?

Cheers

Where is the egr Mark? I dont know what i'm looking for.

I could drive over but havent got a lot of money. What do you charge to look at it? I take it you want to plug the tech2 into it?

1 more thing, some of the vectra guys are mentioning the engine temperature sensor as this produces problems but rarely a code.

Where is this located and where the hell do I get one?

Should it throw up a code or not?

thanks

Hi Mark, i'm over in Grantham and I know you are in West Bridgeford.

What did you have in mind?

Quick question, would the EGR throw up a code?

Omega General Help / Begging for help - strange lack of power
« on: 20 May 2008, 23:18:13 »
Hi all, me and the missus are having problems with our 2.0 16v 1998 manual and have hit a dead end. I've posted this a few weeks ago but this is a fuller explanation.

The car has 80k on the clock and has a good history. I've recently changed the crank sensor as that showed up a code and all was well then a week later the cam sensor code came up and the symptoms started. Changed the cam sensor and cleared the code but the problem remains.

Basically, the engine is pinking like mad and under hard acceleration there is a lot of induction noise but a lack of power as if its being restricted. MPG is brutal at 17 mpg round town.

Heres what ive checked.

There are NO codes.

Cat, pipework and boxes all clear

Plugs and leads changed (2 months before the problem started). There was oil in 1 well but this was cleaned out and hasnt returned.

Breathers checked and all clear

Vac pipes and hoses all checked, no leaks etc.

Air box/filter all ok

No EML on

Headgasket ok.

She idles perfectly, no misfires or rattles and will rev freely under light acceleration but if you push the pedal hard from idle theres a HUGE hesitation, a grunt from the airbox, then it picks up. If the engine is running and you open the airbox, instead of a smooth sucking sound its like there a bass box in there.

I've checked just about everything I can think of and am at a loss as to what the problem could be.

I would be really grateful if someone could take the time to give me ideas for what to look at. The fact there are no codes is puzzling but there doesnt seem to be anything mechanically wrong either.

Hope i'm missing something obvious.

Any help is really appreciated

theres also a significant amount of smoke from the exhaust on start-up, regardless of wether the engine is hot or cold.

No rattles from the cat so i'm thinking its something more serious.

The engine is pinking like mad under load and when I open the airbox and take the filter out while its running the engine is making a rythmical popping sound as apposed to the usuall induction suck.

Does this sound like a stuck valve and would this have caused the cam sensor fault to show up? what does the cam sensor do?

Really need some suggestions here cos i'm running out of ideas and its the missus kiddy carrier so we are stuck without it.

Please help!

I was kind of thinking along those lines but the car is 80,000 miles old and I thought the cat might have given up, it looks pretty rough from under the car but I didnt check the back box.

Better go and give it a shake.

Omega General Help / No performance after sensors changed
« on: 14 May 2008, 23:09:49 »
Well, replaced the cam sensor tonight, and the crank sensor 2 weeks ago and the car seems to be running better but there is still the lack of performance and an overly load induction/exhaust noise. I paperclipped it when it started playing up but only the cam sensor showed 0340.

I've done a plug and lead change, and checked the breathers and all are clean n clear. The problem only seemed to turn up when the cam sensor started playing up but I cant think what has gone wrong, unless the ecu hasnt sorted itself out yet after the new sensor was fitted.

What are the symptoms of a knackered cat or lamda sensor? Should I get a code for both of these? Car is a 2.0 16v 1998 manual with aircon

When idling, if you blip the throttle there is a huge hesitation before it revs but if you do it smoothly it revs ok. When driving it seems to be producing a lot of noise and not a lot of go, certainly less than usual.

Its had new crank and cam sensors in the last couple of weeks but I thought it would purr after these were done but I think I might have other issues.

Help please!  :y

Omega General Help / Can cam sensor fault be intermittent?
« on: 09 May 2008, 08:12:43 »
Hi all, replaced my crank sensor recently as I was having starting problems and all was good again.

Now we have a new problem. Paperclipped her and she shows an 0340 (we have a 1998 manual 2.0 16v)

Thing is, it only does it every now and then. EML has only come on once and doesnt come on with the fault.

When driving it will start to run rough and sound like an induction kit has been fitted but performace is non existant. Then it will cure itself and carry on ok for a bit.

Question is, are they tempermental or should it just fail? I've seen loads of threads where people have tried more than 1 sensor to cure the problem so I want to get it right.

Any thoughts and links to suppliers would be handy.

Cheers, Sturt and Kirsty
