Omega General Help / Re: Plug Lead Order on DISPack
« on: 24 September 2010, 06:32:32 »
Can you clarify, the engine didn't miss-fire on idle BEFORE you changed the coil pack, leads and plugs? If so, it can only be the order you have reconnected the leads.

Hello,

It is easy to make an error (I did), though the numbers are written on the coil pack, you are working just by touch as the pack is so awful to get to. On the odd side the sockets on the pack are logical, ie they line up with the plugs in order. My mistake was to assume the same on the even side. The shortest lead (spark plug 6) doesn't goto the nearest coil pack socket, but instead the middle socket on the coil. I made this error and thought I had ruined the car, but all was ok once corrected.

Omega General Help / Re: Pre mini lift Recaro into Mini Facelift.

Hello,

I thought the seats in the mv6 are Recaros? They have Recaro written on the metal bits under the seat anyway. And the car still has side airbags. So why not get some of these fitted to your car, they can then plug into the cars electrics with no issues? They are better than the ones I had in my Vectra sri of old.

Omega General Help / Drive Belt Length
« on: 26 September 2010, 18:55:34 »
Hello,

Just asking people here, as Vauxhall don't know.
How long a drive belt should be for a 1998 3.0 MV6 with air-con and power steering?
I've been to the 'experts' ie Vauxhall Service, but they haven't a clue, as the one they've supplied is miles too long (2260mm).

Thats a good, wise quote. The trouble is, it isn't a little bit more -it is six times more. The leads have done the trick on my car -no more pinking when the engine is stressed.

The leads I've obtained from them are identical in design to my original ones. Minus 3 things: the useful number tags on each cable, the cable tidy/shield on the even ones and being a little longer.

I do think people worry too much about non originals, the belief that if you pay £180 rather than £27 for some leads and think you are getting something six times better, is likely to only be in the mind.

Hello,

I agree, the adverts for these delivery companies like UPS show a happy, easy going and transport system. But if you visit one of these sites, like I used to have to do to pickup my computer bits each day, they are somewhat closer to mayhem, in a tumble down old depot (the Eastleigh one is anyway). The people there were friendly enough though and they did very much, try to stick within their delivery times. There are many other 'man in a van' companies out there, who provide no delivery times, just within 7 days or so, but are much much cheaper to use than the big USA companies.

Hello,

I'm not saying they-re good, they could be quite hopeless, just that I've bought some spark leads and a belt today, both were in stock and they were cheap. And cheap is my favorite word.

Yes that can be an issue, I've had the same problem ordering parts, delays and the like. I never trust delivery companies, unless you know its coming by a proper one like DHL or TNT. I've got a store in town, so can check the item as I pick it up.

Hello,

Here a is good place to pickup cheap Omega bits: 'Euro Car Parts'. For example, a drive belt for an 3.0 £48 from Vauxhall, £15 from Euro or Spark Plug Leads for a 3.0 £185!!! from Vauxhall, £27 from Euro. I've just bought both from my MV6 and can see no difference to my originals and no more pinking from it too. It goes to show how much markup there is on these items.

Omega General Help / Clutch change exhaust issue
« on: 24 September 2010, 07:18:26 »
Hello,

I am building up finances for a clutch change and 'think' I can do it myself (for the first time ever). The clutch bit, I think I can handle (maybe), but wondered if you can remove the gearbox WITHOUT removing the twin cats? I know mine are likely to be very rusty and a real big issue to remove.

They look nasty to replace (wishbones), but as your mechanic advises, they could be the problem. There is a good 'how to do it' on this site, which I will refer to closely to change mine. Then its that 'steering box' as I stand corrected, to look at. Though little info here on that bit.

Hello,

Mine does the same thing (or at least similar), knocks when you turn the wheel or go over rumble strips. I've replaced the drop links, steering idler and both tie rods, but to no avail, infact it is gradually getting worse. Wishbones or the steering rack its-self are my next considered culprits.

Omega General Help / Re: smoke or steam?
« on: 16 September 2010, 09:08:36 »
Hello, mine (and I hope everyones) does the same, on damp days it is like a steam engine, puffing out loads when you are sitting at the lights. But you have to remember that is a very good engine in a very underrated car.

I thought mine was faulty, but it never uses a drop of water and the oil is perfect, ignore the oil cap being a bit milky, that is normal too I am told. Regular oil changes are the key to extended life, it is like a good beer for humans.
