Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: Sat Nav Query
« on: 21 November 2010, 21:05:03 »
Maybe I have failed to get this gist of it - mine won't seem to let me just put in a town and a street, it continually asks me for a town, a street, and another street that it intersects. I don't necessarily know another street that the one I want intersects with and if I guess (it gives me options) if it is a long road I could be taken miles from where I want to be........
Am I doing something wrong?
I would be happy if I could just put in a town to get me very close to where I want to be....
When I say useless I would rather beg my girlf to borrow her tom tom and go to the aggravation of getting it out of her car rather than spending 5 minutes trying to programme it with the fiddly twiddy selector and then not get to where I want to go.
But if I could just put in either postcode, or town and a single road name, I'd be in business!!
It also says 'you are leaving the digitized area' or something very similar on a regular basis- do I need to update the disc (I imagine it is the same one that came with it in 1999 - the previous owner hardly used it....) and where would I get one from if so?
Thanks for all advice in advance!

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Sat Nav Query
« on: 21 November 2010, 16:40:09 »
I have just read somewhere that allegedly you can buy an upgrade CD for the Sat Nav system in a 99 'T' mini facelift Omega Elite that means that you are able to enter a postcode (luxury!) that transforms it from a nigh on useless system to something usable - is this true? Any information on this may save me buying a Tom Tom.
Thanks in advance!

Have been using an FM transmitter but the quality is not brilliant - better than nothing though. I shall be trying one of these having just splashed out on fleabay to the tune of £2.99. I'll let you know how I get on.
If you want to spend £100 to £150 you can buy a kit that plugs directly into your aerial plug hole in the back of the radio (assuming that the Omega has a standard one, I haven't come across many cars that are different.....) I had one installed for a customer of mine a year or two ago on a Vauxhall Agila with no obvious other means of doing it. She was very happy with the performance of it and she was quite picky. Tried it a few times with my ipod and it sounded quite reasonable.

I had a go at stripping down a set of leather seats from a P reg Omega to see how difficult it was - my mini facelift T reg Omega seats are mint so I didn't want to practice on them. It is easy enough to get them apart, but when I got the cover off (easy enough apart from I couldn't work out how to get the black headrest bits in the very top of the seat out - ended up 'assisting' them with a hammer as I knew by that point I wouldn't be using the seat again - if anyone knows for future reference how to get these out whole I'd be interested to know in case I end up stripping my good seats....) I found that the heated seat pad in the back of the seat is securely fixed/sewn to the leather - not easy to separate if you were intending to replace the whole heating pad.
Unless I'm missing something, in which case I'd be very pleased to be educated as I'm not that practical....
I'm guessing that the easiest way is to either replace the seats in their entirety (I'm looking if someone has a set - please don't delete my post moderator, I'm working towards my 250 posts!!) or to repair the existing element, which is still hard to get to - you have to cut into the foam pad to find the two broken ends of element to join them back together again somehow. If anyone in Gatwick or Tonbridge area knows how to do this I'll gladly provide bacon sarnies, tea and some cash to get me some warmth for the winter.....
Thanks in advance.

I have had the same problem - is there a strip down guide on the forum anywhere? I have a set of earlier seats (my car 1999 pre-facelift) from a 1996 (allegedly) Omega with (allegedly) working heated seat elements. Can these be swopped over? Thanks for any advice. One day I will get all the bits on this car working together, at the same time lol. I'm nearly there!!!

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: check message has came up
« on: 21 November 2010, 13:26:16 »
Just a quick and probably stupid question - when I start my Omega is always says 'brake check' in the radio display section. It goes off when I touch the brakes and all the brake lights and brakes are working fine - is that what is supposed to happen?
Thanks.

Hi, Did anyone find the diagrams for the heated seat dismantling. Preferably idiot proof if possible, especially if it involves making sure you don't set off the airbag by mistake..... Saw one article that said someone broke their arm setting one off, but unfortunately didn't tell you how not to..... And no smart comments about keeping your arm out of the way lol Thanks!! Edward.

I asked for some help locating someone who could do my cambelt in the South East - I am based near Gatwick. I got a few replies and suggestions and I also got a pm from someone called Darth Loo Knee. It said if I needed some help with my cambelt to give him a shout. I gave him a call and he said he would come and do my cambelt and cam cover gaskets. I admit I was pretty dubious - did I really want to spend money with someone I don't know who messages me from a forum? I was intrigued so I gave him a call and he quoted me a competitive price and only charged me fuel at cost to drive for three hours to get to me. Even taking this into account it was a VERY sensible price.

I thought that it had to be too good to be true, he asked me for a deposit if I wanted the work done as people had been messing him about and put him out of pocket. I was reluctant to give a deposit, and fired the same back to him - how did I know he was any good? After years as a sales manager in the motor trade I have seen some truly awful work, met some cowboys and got generally used to being taken for a ride and finding very few good people out there..... He suggested I came back onto the forum and posted a question to find out, so I did. I think I had nearly 30 positive responses, including one which said that in another life he had actually designed the Omega.

I duly took a chance, my cynicism somewhat alleviated by the positive feedback, but it did cross my mind that 'Darth' could have just had a lot of log-ins in different names, they were all such complimentary replies......
The deposit sent, we arranged for 'Darth' to come down a couple of weeks later to do the work. He arrived, slightly late, but had texted me to let me know he was stuck on the car park that is the M25. When he got to me he introduced himself as 'Daz' (and explained that Darth was just a name someone had given him on the forum) and started putting on his overalls - I asked him if he wanted to put my car in the garage so he could work on it there, slightly warmer for him I thought. He said he was quite happy to work outside as it wasn't raining.

I stopped outside to watch him work - I really hate it when people do this to me, but I can't help myself. He gave me a full running commentary of what he was doing - every tool came to hand, following a system that he had clearly devised after doing hundreds of these cambelts - it was something like watching an Omega cambelt martial arts workout. The bits came off and I thought 'My God, I hope he remember where all that goes!' I suggested he put a video of him doing one on Youtube - quite something to watch! I watched as he carefully put all the tiny bits coming off my pride and joy into a magnetic tin, taking great care in everything he did, explaining things and talking me through the good and bad points of the Omega and the weak points to watch for and what I should do to keep mine running as sweetly as possible. He took great care in sorting out the timing for the cambelt, pointing out to me that the timing had been very slightly out which could lead to slightly rough running and poorer mpg. I said that I thought it had been ok, but reserved judgement until I heard it running again.

He then moved onto the camcover gaskets, explaining that too much sealant would ruin the seal and when they next came to be changed would be a nightmare to get excess sealant off. He neatly wiped any minor excess off, leaving the engine bay neat and tidy. He pointed out at this point that one of the vacuum pipes was split at the end and that my 'vario-ram' wouldn't be working (any mistake in the terminology is mine not his!!) but repaired this free of charge for me by taking a section out and refitting it. The innards of my car went back together beautifully - I watched the big pile of tiny bits in the magnetic tray get smaller and smaller, thinking all the time, 'There's going to be something left over.... Surely he can't remember where it all goes!!'

I went back inside for 5 minutes to do us some bacon sarnies and coffee (allegedly it is known as 'Darth fuel') and when I came back in I couldn't believe how much had gone back together - I had obviously been halving his speed by chatting to him! He inhaled the bacon sandwich and coffee, still talking and working - impressive trick, I thought...... He got to the end and I thought - "I've got him!" There was a little piece of plastic left over. I pointed it out and he said "Its broken". I asked if it was important - apparently it secured a cable into place that looked to me that it didn't really need to be any further secured. He replied that if it was his car he would do it, so he would advise me to get a new one as nothing less than prefect would do. I also queried whether it was even worth doing anything with the vacuum tube he had repaired - he advised me to get a new vacuum tube as although the one he repaired for me worked the ram things perfectly well, it was not as it had been designed so should be replaced. I stood duly corrected, feeling like a bodge-it merchant.

We started the car up and got rid of the air in the cooling system and I was surprised to hear and feel that it was running smoother. Nice work!

In conclusion, if you are fed with with shonky rip off merchants, you couldn't hope to meet someone more helpful, clearly with a HUGE amount of knowledge and ability when it comes to the Omega, and even a pleasant bloke to deal with and chat to. And this is coming from (and it pains me to say) a super cynical untrusting perfectionist who hates people going near his car. I've found a good'un and will be using Daz again - well played for being a decent bloke and actually doing what you say on the tin!

Thanks for the work, no longer fretting about my cambelt and leaking camcover gaskets and swear it is going better than ever, particularly up the top end of the rev range. All previous good references totally deserved!

All thanks to the OOF as well!

Omega General Help / Re: HELP ! iam really stumped now
« on: 21 November 2010, 21:25:30 »
Darth Loo Knee came down to do my cambelt and pointed out that I had a similar problem albeit on a much lesser scale by the sounds of things. He told me what is was most likely to be (something behind the cambelt cover I think - perhaps a sensor of some kind?) that has a tendency to go. I'm afraid I don't remember the name of it but perhaps worth asking him what the name of it is?

Omega General Help / Re: Low mpg - engine faulty?
« on: 21 November 2010, 13:22:27 »
I've just bought a 1.3 CDTi Vauxhall Combo to hack about in as I needed a van and was getting fed up with a boot full of my plumbing gear and assorted tools, so I can save my Omega for 'best'. I am curious to know what other 3.0 V6 Auto drivers are getting though - I have been getting an average of 23 with the 'eco' button on (ie no air con) for mixed driving with a lead foot. Is this normal? It goes down to about 21.5 with the aircon on in the summer....

Well reading through your testimonials of Daz has almost been emotional  ;) Either he is truly very good or he has a lot of log ins to the OOF and is desperate for work lol. Well thanks to you all I shall make the phone call tomorrow to book Darth in to come and sort the beast's innards out. Can't believe so many recommendations! I shall post my experience on here when he has finished - I am looking forward to meeting the legend that is Darth!!
Thanks again to all!
Edward!  :)

Omega General Help / Darth Wyatt Twerp
« on: 01 November 2010, 15:42:05 »
Hi all,

I asked the question on this forum about someone to do the cambelt on my Omega in the south east and "Darth Wyatt Twerp" aka Daz came back to me and said he would do it. He seems very nice and knowledgeable but I was wondering (I have spoken to him about this already, so he knows I'm asking on here) if there was anyone on here who could vouch for his work - he is doing the cambelt, cam cover gaskets and breathers (?) - obviously booking someone to come and do important work to the innards of your car and giving them reasonable amounts of money requires a big leap of faith when you have never met them. Just wondering if there were some kind people out there who could give him a thumbs up or a thumbs down.

Thank you very much in advance for your input.

Best regards,

Edward.

P.S. If you want to pm rather than post on here for fear of reprisal from Darth that would be great too. (Thanks Lizzie :)  )
