Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: Radio, Fuses and Manuals
« on: 24 January 2011, 16:43:22 »
Finally got a day to have a fiddle with this and sort the problem.

The drivers side was easy peasy, but im having trouble with the passenger side. 2 things really. 1) the rubber piece that is in the drain appears to be without a drain hole, as when its all in place correctly it will not drain. The only way i can get the water to disappear is to lift the edge of the gromit up. The only thought i had was that the forward (i.e. towards the front of the car) side of the gromit has a drain hole in it but i cannot see it and cant reach it to have a mess with. Which leads me to 2) is there any way to remove the pollen filter/air plastic trunking so i can get my arm in properly? At present im having to squeeze through a gap and even with my arms that doesnt let me get past my elbow, so i can barely reach the gromit.

Nice one, il give that a go. Interestingly, its just had a new windscreen. I suspect this is the cause of hearing what sounds like an open window at speed, so it could all be related i suppose.

The radio now works, only had a spare 10A fuse so thats gone on there, shouldnt hurt :)

Thanks all!

Some updates;

I found a manual, which lists fuse 6. Oddly, fuse 6 has no fuse in it at present, partly because there is no metal connection (and presumably therefore there has never been).

Apologies its the 400 model. I forget the letters before, but its the one that has a slightly different version with a cd autochanger. Mine however is just radio and cassette!

Il check the fuse again, il report back soon.

Thanks for the other comments, il give them a check at some point!

P.S.

Check under the scuttle on the passsenger side for a blocked drain.

What do you mean by 'scuttle'?

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Radio, Fuses and Manuals
« on: 17 January 2011, 21:31:06 »
Hi gents.

Ive just been given (i.e. for free) a 97 2.5 v6 Auto for a run around in for a bit. It needs a few things sorting but nothing major, quite happy with it tbh.

However there are some issues.

1) The radio will not work. None of the buttons work, nor is there any messages on the screen (such as CODE or SAFE). There are no lights on the unit, which leads me to suspect that the fuse might have gone. But where on earth is it? Ive found 2 fuse boxes, one under the bonnet and one under the steering wheel but the sticker doesnt suggest a radio fuse (closest is one that says CD on the bottom row, but this is the non CD car and that fuse is missing anyway. Is there another fuse box?
2) Related really to the above point, and indeed the one below, there isnt a manual with the car, only the audio manual which is of no help whatsoever. The Haynes manual i found on the net only covers fixing things on the car and not any of the wiring diagrams etc. Does anyone know where i could get one, preferbly with a fuse list and things. Theres a few mysterious buttons that im trying to find the use of.
3) Currently the screen has a message of Brake Pad on, permanently (apart from sometimes when the key is put in the ignition, it has some mentions of what looks like CO2 and things (hard to tell exactly, theres a few dodgy pixels!). I took the wheel off earlier and had a look at the pads, they looked glorious really, loads of life so i assume the rest are fine. What i couldnt spot though, and thats presumably the cause of the message, is a tire wear indicator cable, which has either been removed by way of scissors or fallen off. Is there a way to get rid of the message?
4) There seems to be an awful lot of condensation both inside and outside the car at the moment. All the other cars in the house, including my clapped out clit are clear as a bell, but the omega has water on the inside of the window and steam outside. It doesnt smell damp inside the car, or indeed appear to be. Any suggestions?

Thats all for now. Theres a fair bit of oil leaking which i havnt traced exactly yet, and some oil dripping onto a faily hot pipe somewhere causing a small amount of burning when the cars warm, but otherwise its in pretty good nick.

Hopefully someone can help?

Regards,
Steve

Omega General Help / Re: High fuel consumption.
« on: 31 March 2011, 13:23:49 »
I similarly get about 17mpg on the run to and from work (which is why i dont use the omega anymore for that tbh!). On motorways it jumps up to about 40mpg, however.

But i had a query about this. It feels as if i have to rev the engine harder than i would expect to get her moving, which i think may be contributing to a higher mpg. It would be nice to get it to something more like 20-25mpg on local roads.

For instance, i went from Cannock to Manchester and back the other day, by the time i got off the motorway the readout read 31.7mpg but then in the 3 or 4 miles from there to home that had dropped to 30.1mpg. Significant effect then, really, given that it was a 150 mile round trip (in manchester i drove to the airport parking area and back again, so not long spent faffing around!).

Is there anything simple i can do (other than the right foot option, as im trying my hardest not to overuse the loud pedal when im driving around at low speed) that could improve the local road fuel consumption. It feels as if its a little low on power low end....

(one thing of note, when changing the cam covers a while back i noticed the connector in the plug leads had snapped off on cylinder 2. Its not misfiring, but if i tried to pull it out whilst running id get a nice little shock, which suggests it might not be the most efficient spark in the world. Could this be having an effect on mpg?)

Ive had a mooch at the link above and compared it to mine (mine is like the top diagram i think), but i still cant fathum it out. The pipe i have extra should go down to the front vac reservoir but i can only spot one pipe going in to it, and no other places to put this extra pipe. Im therefore a bit lost  :-/

Ace, thats pretty cool, i think therefore its the one to the ECU. Thanks

The breather pipes you mention, where are they? Are they the 4 on the back of the plenum (2 big 2 small?)?

Re: the oil, the oil leak seems to have mostly cleared up, just the odd drop. I think this is just the oil residue thats splattered all over the engine getting warm and dripping down and presumably over time it will gradually dry up. Same with the smoke, which pretty much now has completely gone :)

The problem now seems to be that the car doesnt like cornering. I spun yesterday at 30mph, luckily not hitting anything. But thats for another thread :o

Right here we go;

The one at the top right goes off to the back of the radiator, the one in the middle  (pointing left) goes off to the fan unit behind the pollen filter. The one at the bottom is the one im unsure of!!!

Its about 2mm in diameter (i dont know that in 1000th's of an inch, sorry :P) and about 4 feet long.

Really? Because there are 3 tubes coming out of it, and it looks as if all 3 of the tubes all come from the same place (1 input, 3 outputs!)

Right some answers;

Yes, the half moon on the right (from front of car) of the drivers side cam cover wasnt seated right. I took it off, reapplied sealant and stuck it back on, all good now.

There is still a small oil leak though. I think some of it may be due to the oil thats caked all over the bottom of the engine and steering arm and all that, theres quite a bit really. That said, I used the car to see how it went last night, got back and stuck a bit of card underneath, after about 15 minutes there were a few small spots but ive looked today and there seems to be a lot more. The cam covers are clean as a whistle, so ive no idea where that oil is coming from. Before all this work the oil made a generally circular pattern on a piece of card, not its more like a T, roughly central under the car, with the join on the T being about in line with the back of the sump. Any ideas?

Whats more, there is still this ongoing oil smoke. Every time i stop the car after its got warm (i.e. a couple of minutes) theres smoke coming from behind the engine. It looks like its coming off some of the exhaust pipes in the back of the engine, but its very hard to spot. At times there is quite a large amount of smoke. Im 99% certain its oil thats burning for whatever reason. There are some brown patches on some of the exhausts, is this likely to be the cause? If so, will it go away over time or require a good clean?

A few other things;

The only thing i couldnt find a home for after putting it all back together is the aforementioned piece of pipe. Theres one rubber mount i can see where it seems to live at the back of the plenum but i dont know where it connects to. Any ideas? Out of that rubber mount is quite a resonably high air flow.

They are Vx ones, so i guess they'd be alright.

That said, ive spent the last two hours looking and cant spot any oil coming from anywhere. I managed to sneak a finger to the half moon seals and they seem to be in place, though the one that i thought might be leaking is in an ever so slightly different position to the one that definitely isnt leaking.

In summary, it seems as if it may not be the cam cover that is leaking (short of taking the plenum off). So the next question is is there anything on that side of the engine that has a tendency to spew oil everywhere if not positioned correctly? I crawled under the car as much as i could and couldnt see much, though there was one small section, about 4 inches long, of rubber pipe that had oil dripping from, but i couldnt see whether this was from that pipe or because something was dripping from above.

The bolts arnt overtightened, they are barely more than finger tight. Happily there is no oil sloshing around the spark plugs, which is a start :)

Oh, back to the hose question, ive still no idea where it connects. The rubber hose it joins by the back drivers side of the plenum is blowing out air. Slightly to the side of it is another hose that is connected to something just behind the radiator and also there is another one running off to the fan unit (i assume) behind the pollen filter. Any suggestions as to where the other pipe goes? (if thats too vague il try and get a picture up tomorrow!)

Omega General Help / Cam Cover Half Moon Leak
« on: 14 February 2011, 17:52:22 »
Howdy,

So bit of a balls up, got all the new gaskets on and fitted and finally got the plenum back on. Took the car for a spin but got back to even more oil smoke from under the bonnet and a trail of oil up the drive. Happily there is only oil leaking from one side of the V6 now but it appears to be pissing out of the somewhere, leading me to suspect its the half moon thats not seated correctly (it'll be the one of the right of the left cam cover, if looked at from the front!). The only other thing that i guess it could be is that i had to guess the torque for the cam cover/plenum bolts, mainly because my torque wrench only starts at 20. I was doing them up with a ratchet basically until there was a bit of resistance and tweaking them only slightly more (i.e. 1/10th of a turn or so!). Could that result in such a large oil leak?

So it leads to a few questions;

Is it possible to get to the half moon and squeeze it out without removing the plenum again. If not, what is the bare minimum that'll need to come off the plenum to let me get at it?

How many heat cycles go through the seals before they start to harden into there position? In other words, if i have to take the cam cover off again to get at the offending seal, will the same seal be ok to put back on, or am i going to have to order another one? Same i guess with the o-rings.

Will that oil leak have left the spark plugs swimming in oil again as they were before the gaskets were replaced? If so, does it really matter (i.e. can it be left, assuming i dont have to take the cam cover off again!)?

On an associated note, ive ended up with a pipe that a cant find the home of, and indeed 2 torx screws. The pipe is the type that connects the radiators to various things at the back, and usually fits into a rubber hose. Im left with a metre long piece, with only one rubber hose (at the back drivers side of the plenum) but cant find anywhere else to put it. Are any of them meant to be left unattached to act as an overflow or something?

Thats the lot, hopefully!

Omega General Help / Re: car doesnt feel right
« on: 07 February 2011, 11:40:35 »
Its perhaps worth mentioning, i was having a similar sounding issue, car wandering around, seemingly affected by cambering on the road and things. Gave it an MOT as ive only just got it and it failed on the front bush, though when we've inspected it properly the rear one was quite bad also. Currently the whole wishbone is being replaced as its only a few quid more.

Il let you know if that cures it!
