Replacement automatic gearbox
« on: 15 March 2012, 18:48:51 »

I've decided to replace the auto box on my 2002 2.6 CDX. I've seen 2 boxes advertised at good prices that may do the trick:
Box 1 - Omega 2.5 V6 1994-2003 shape, has covered 84k miles, excellent gearbox, comes with torque convertor, this gearbox has a two letter code on the metal plate that says DF.
Box 2 - Omega 2.6 V6 1994-2003 shape, has covered 93k miles, excellent gearbox, comes with torque convertor, this gearbox has a two letter code on the metal plate that says DN.

Can anyone tell me if the DF or DN has any special significants or would either do?

One other question before I shell out on a replacement. The box only plays up when it gets hot - after about 10 miles and then only sometimes. I believe there is a gearbox radiator which keeps the oil cool. If this got blocked, could it be causing the problems. Is there any way of checking to make sure its working?

Thanks for any advice

What makes you think the old one needs replacing?

What symptoms are you seeing?

The first thing I noticed was in the morning when I put the car into reverse to drive out of my drive, it took about 3/4 seconds before it started moving. After it warms up, it can clonk a bit into 3rd gear. When I come to a standstill I can sometime hear what sounds like a grumbling noise and the car seems to keep trying to push on. It's not dangerous and does stop if I apply more break but you can feel it pushing against the brake for a few seconds. Also, when I go to move off, it seems like an  engine misfire -  it does pick up but it seems to sort of stutter - a bit naughty at junctions if you need a quick getaway. I had the fluid checked and it was low but is OK now.

Who checked the fluid? Was it actually topped up? Slow to actually provide power does point to low fluid.
