It's un-imaginable to us in the west that it's possible for anyone to die of something as 'simple' as diarrhoea  :-X :-X :-X :-X

I'm always in two minds over these things ....

I spent a good deal of time in some of the remoter parts of Kenya whilst in the mob .. it was very interesting that every time we arrived and had the "local info" brief, we were always told, without fail, not to give ANYTHING to the locals .. not food, sweets, money, pencils  .. give them nothing ... seemed strange until the reason was given ... the "men" of the household would use whatever the women got to get hold of alchohol ... regardless of the needs of the kids. There were drugs available to treat many infections and common problems .. but the men thought booze more important than the kids.

The charities used to give the drugs away for free, the men would take them off the kids and travel to another town and sell them to buy booze......

So I'm not sure if all this "charity" achieves much in the long term .. or is just a sop to our consciences ....  :(

Charity begins at home, you should see what I see..... :-X

Sending continuous aid to other countries is mostly wasted by corrupt governments and officials, though I am happy to give to 'Projects' that enable people to help themselves, give them the tools etc...... :y :y :y

But there is the fall back of an over generous welfare state over here .......... a lot of these kids don't have that luxury.

That's not really my argument, we can not save the world, we pour money into countries most of which does not reach the kids seen on the TV and some charities are equally to blame, even in this country I have little faith in big organisations like the NSPCC who pay people large sums of money to generate donations, the net is very small........ >:( >:(

With stuff like this, my priorities are .............

My family
My friends
My countrymen

No malace intended but I don't loose sleep over things like this.

Since diana's toes curled up, this country (and some of the world) have just turned into a bunch of sentimental puffs who blub at the slightest hint of pain or anguish for other countrys but they turn there head away when they see the problems in our own country  >:(

rather hell, we will be using face moisteriser and other male beauty products next  ::)

The planet, like our country is far to over populated anyway  ;)

I am not in the Overseas Development business as such but I do know Sierra Leone and it is supposed to be one of the success stories of our wonderful Dept for International Development - apparently it is not then. If it is one of "our" projects and our aid budget is £7 billion + and rising what the hell are they doing to have Sierra Leone as the worst child mortality rate. Memories are short and I remember well the scandal of the hotel compounds full of white new Toyota Landcruisers all piled up in Freetown and the exposure of waste and excesses of so called Development Professionals.

You need to put in perspective the good intentions of John Bishop and others to put a few million together and just ask what is happening to the £7 billion + and that is JUST for the UK.

I too have spent time in Africa and the sight of aid workers driving round in spanking new Land cruisers, staying at 5 star hotels while drawing $5000 per month salaries is very common!!  ::) I'm sure some do good works, but you do wonder....  :-\

While in Malawi once, I was told of a large donation from a western charity to build a new village school.  The materials were purchased and builders engaged.  I asked to see the new school, but was taken to see the Chiefs smart new house instead!!  >:( >:( >:(
