Try one, the stronger the alcohol level the longer a drink will generally keep.

About 12 months a go I found 8 very old cans of Guinness, in the back of my workbench cupboard, I had bought them in France and they had a best before date of 1997, I was surprised they were perfectly okay.

It is an ill wind that does nobody any good.  :'(

When this happens I sure the cross Channel booze run become very popular again, which will be good for mainly French owned Eurotunnel, Brittany Ferries and French supermarkets. Should give a good boost to the French GDP.  :o :o :o

I have to admit that I don't really understand this issue.....  :-[

Is duty not charged on off sales? Is the proposed 40p per unit a tax or just a minimum price?

If it's a minimum price all it will do is boost the profits of the supermarkets?  If they want to increase the price, why not increase the duty on off sales and help the country's finances?  :-\

In my opinion, the only way to stop the drunken disorder in our towns and cities is to robustly police and enforce the drunk and disorderly laws!! Throw people in a drunk tank! Fine them! Make them do community service!! Also if you end up in hospital as a result of irresponsible drinking you should be charged for your treatment!!  >:( >:( >:(

I'm probably sounding like a grumpy old man and at 42 that might be right!!  ;)

High taxes was tried in the 1730's and 1740's in the UK, over big problems with 'Gin' as famously depicted in Hogarth paintings. All it did like US prohibition was drive the trade underground. So the laws were appealed in 1751.

It will make no difference in this country, so expect alcohol, like in many Scandinavian countries to become a luxury. Weekend Scandinavian booze cruises in the Baltic Sea are very popular to get round the high taxes, so expect the same again with weekend Channel crossings to France.  ::) ::) ::)

Apparently what they are planning is illegal under EU law as it discriminates against cheaper products and stifles competition. With the EU saying it should be done through taxation. EU Single European Act might actually be useful for once.

This is the start of the outlawing of alcohol, like they are trying hard to do with smoking, still it will make the total banning of  alcohol by our first Muslim majority Government is about two generations much easier as the softening up process will have been going on for 40 years.  >:( >:( >:( >:(
