Poxy fuel leak again! Stupid injectors.
« on: 26 March 2012, 21:51:16 »

Yet again one of the 7 Series has blown its leak off pipe, which I thought was cured with new fuel lines (been driving it around for over a week now with no issues). Driving home Saturday evening strong smell of diesel started coming through from somewhere, looked at my range which two minutes prior to this said 62 miles, now reading 24. Kind of worked out what it'd be, looked down at the range again, and have never seen a range computer go down like that, dropping 2 miles pretty much every second. Pulled over, RAC called waited hour and a half, sat there embarrassed. So I knew the problem was an injector, but was delaying it really hoping its go away however it hasn't, a lesson there kids. I think what annoyed me the most was not the pipe, nor the fact knowing it was an injector it was the amount of fuel it lost because fuel isn't cheap these days. Nor are injectors it seems, absolute cheapest at £250 + VAT each  :(.

Got my youngest son to remove engine cover and investigate what pipe was broken, whilst I decided whether to kick the rear 1/4 panel in or not. Anyway it is leaking at quite a rate too.

Get the injectors refurbed Dell. If that's the cause.

Neighbour with e39 had an injector issue, although iirc his was worn injectors, where as yours sounds more like a blockage. They run at enormous pressure, with numerous pumps and filters in the fuel system. A decent diagnostics session should show faults in the fuel system. The parameters are very tight.

I might know a man if that helps.

Chris, If your bloke you know will do piezo injectors, pretty please could you ask him? Any Info you need, reg No, engine number, VIN etc etc ask and I'll give the info. Hardly anyone including my local diesel specialist who has done everything diesel for me in the past says its uneconomic to refurb piezo injectors because of the high cost of spares. Put it this way one quote was £275 + £50 surcharge for each injector. Earlier 730/530/330d's didn't run piezo injectors so could be refurbed and bought for about £150 each. A new one from BMW is £355+ VAT and that's a trade price too. I think to be honest it's one injector down as the pipe has split in the same place twice. Had a look at the other 7 Series to see how they go together, and that's had 3 new injectors already, this was is still on its originals.

Had injector faults with my Astra Van at 18k miles, which luckily was under warranty. Pity this isn't  >:(

Think of the poor Renault drivers who get charged £1400 for 4 on a 1.9/2.0 diesel  :o Makes the £750 no better though  >:( >:(
