mobile broadband
« on: 05 April 2012, 15:20:55 »

Couple prob silly questions lol
So, while on the boat I use my fone to share out its 3g for internets i get about 1.5meg speedings, I keep hearing something about 4G is this actualy availible yet? is it just faster? will i need new fone or dongle to use it?
also, what the hell is edge?
And any ideas on how to get quicker net on my boat. I have to keep my network with vodafone to use my suresignal box at home for a signal so Id have to get a second system which i could just leave on the boat.
thanking yous  :) :y

Speedwise, slowest up:
2g
EDGE (2.5G)
3g
3.5g
(the range of pseudo 4g that aren't 4g, sometimes called 3.9g)
Proper 4g

Unlikely 4g will get anywhere rural for a while, not commercially available in UK yet AFAIK.

If you need new hardware will depend on your current hardware.

The speeds you get are perfectly adequate for general net access. Mobile broadband will never match fix line....

...and to be perfectly honest, if I can serve OOF, alongside my general use, from a 256kbps (yes, kilobit) line for 5.5yrs, having 1Mbps sounds like a luxury ;)

Most heavy duty streaming will upset your provider. seXbox is shite on mobile, high latency kills gaming.
