Just not sure if it's a problem
« on: 10 April 2012, 13:53:54 »

Having not driven the Omega for 6 months,  I really can't remember if this is common on starting an Omega. The problem is when the key is put in the ignition and is turned on all the lights come on the display which is correct. Then when i turn it further to actually start the car there is a considerable pause of about two seconds then the car fires up normally. It seems like the car actually thinks about it. Anyone else had this happen to them or is it normal?

Cheers

Do you mean there's a pause before it starts cranking? If so, then no, that's not normal. The ignition switches power directly to the solenoid via the auto gearbox interlock so if there's a delay it might point to a poor connection somewhere. Ignition switch failing or gearbox selector switch perhaps?

Yes a definite pause before cranking. Tending to think it may be the ignition as at times the key is hard to remove. I don't want to start removing the ignition barrel if not neccessary so what checks can be done.
Thanks for  your help

Key removal stickiness is probably more down to the lock barrel than the switch, which is a separate component. Worth stripping the lock barrel down now, though, before it fails completely.

Remove all the levers and clean, de-burr and lubricate then reassemble. I think there's a maintenance guide.

Ok car now not starting at all. Removed the ignition barrel and cleaned the contacts on the barrel connector at back. They were slightly carboned up and upon refitting still nothing. Power is getting to the starter solenoid as there is a definite click but upon full turn of the key nothing. Beginning to think it is the connector that the barrel slots into part no 902505912 that is at fault. Any suggestions anyone before I go and purchase a new connecter.

Solenoid signal passes through the autobox selector switch, so that's a possibility.

Could be high resistance so the solenoid isn't pulling in fully. Could be the solenoid / starter itself, although they are normally reliable. Check the crimped connections on the battery terminals too.

If that looks OK, try connecting the starter solenoid terminal to the battery with a jump lead and see if starter engages.

Still causing a problem. Cleaned the gearbox selector solenoid and although slightly better there is still a delay. Going to clean the starter motor leads next but having trouble trying to find pictures of the starter motor and access to it. Looked in the maintenance guide but couldn,t find any reference to it. There must be a reference to it somewhere so i will keep looking.

It may be, but I am thinking it could be just down to a bad connection as the solenoid on the starter motor clicks in fine and the delay of nothing happening then firing up fine. Some days it won't start at all then other days it will be fine. Really bloody frustrating. >:(

Just had similar problems with my 2.2.....turn the key....delay..then turned engine over as it was hard work.....next day would be ok...then it let me down in the middle of no where...eventually started drove it home and decided to change the starter motor as everything else checked out...and low and behold that has cured it... :y
