Wonder if it's worth checking the servo tronic plug connector to box...

...although that would raise a code surely?

Servotronic setting is making a difference, so the servotronic module is modulating the valve on the steering box. No problems there.

Has to be something hydraulic / mechanical.

I would guess a steering box problem would give an odd feel, given the way the steering boxes work, not just low assistance but slop, tight spots and loose spots. Just a guess, though.

Er, mmmnot sure it Labours, there is a squish noise as it comes off full lock as the pas pressure releases. I'll check tomorrow. it does sound unusual, or at least it I thought it was at the time. :-\

The feeling is odd, like there's a pre load pulling it back to centre. Which makes me think top mount barings. And might explane the stiff direction swapping round, ESP if it's been on full lock while parking or similar, which might allow the pitted top mount barings to sit In a Differant pit giving different resistance if the race has jumped to the next "station" so to speak... Although i'd expect to feel it give in that case....No tight or loose spots at all.

Wish I had persevered finding better top mount barings now, as I needed the car, it went back together as is. :(

Does it self centre ok or is it a bit dead?

Can you feel a slight lock up/lumpyness at any point?

Your question sounds exactly as my car does... although only on left turn  :-\ What would cause symptoms in your question?

it's very keen to self centre, I think that's the main sensation from it. like its being pulled back to centre. Like its loading up. Although it does need to be centred when straightening up out of a turn.

No locking up. Might get stiffer away from centre. Most noticeable turning into side streets(slow 90 degree corners at about 20mph type jobs) which iirc equates to about 180 degree turn of the steering wheel away from centre.

It sounds like it might have been adjusted up a little to tight, try backing the adjustment out a half turn.

Slow to self centre or tightness would be an over tightened adjuster on the steering box.

A lumpyness could be a damaged ball in the steering box a problem with one of the ball races.

Ok, thanks. Seems to confirm I need a new steering box. A bit of a thread hi-jack but any hints or how-to on changing the box?
