How to stop rust
« on: 18 May 2012, 11:09:06 »

May be a silly question but is there a way to stop rust completely on body panels.

I have tried rust converters etc., but within 6-8 months the rust starts bubbling the paint again.

Basically I am thinking of getting a few of my panels resprayed.
But is there some sort of coating I can put on them before priming and spraying to stop rust?
Or is there a method I can employ if I strip it back to the bare metal?

What I am looking for is the same effect as galvanising has - may be impossible, but worth an ask.

The only way of ensuring rust doesnt come back is by replacing the affected panel.

i had a rusty wheel arch, tried to fix myself (complete novice) messed it up and ended up taking it to a body shop. awesome job but after 6-7 months it's now bubbling again. i personally am not bothered because the arch looks good where he's sprayed and filled correctly.... so just the bubbles.

anyway, imo replacing is only real option but that can be very very expensive.

only way to stop rust is to remove it compleatly by cutting it out...
There is a product on market that does kill rust dead but if you rush it forget it it will eventually come back,
Good primers & plenty of paint does the job you need to stop water coming in contact with bare steel but due too the amount of shite on uk roads & there condition, also they dont use road "rock salt" its now a mixture of chemicals in winter you really have to keep ontop of washing, repairing small stonechips, jetwashing under arches & then rewaxoiling is the only way you will ever stop rust appearing on your arches but if its started to rust forget it you wont stop it now...,

On the door bottoms it rusts by water dripping down inside of glass & window rubbers but these also take dust & crud down into door bottom inside filling the drainholes, water muck collects rotting it inside out.. only way to stop this is by 1 finding a good door & waxoiling the inside of door skin by removing doorcard etc also helps sound deaden cars, the omega doors are huge heavy things it doesnt matter how careful you are you will clout the door edge on something i bet there isnt 1 car on here with a front door with atleast 1 chip on the bottom corner!!! or somewhere up the door shut edge...??? theres your prob again water gets in under paint & before you notice its bubbling up on the corners  :'(

1 place most people always overlook is under the plastic sideskirts yes they are away from stonechips but are basicly 5ft long water salt stone & mud traps that rotts your sills out, under mot guidlines they are not allowed to touch the skirt to look behind it so all of us are unaware of this rot until the inner sill req repair or your jacking point dissapears threw the floor!!! it takes about 10/15mins to take sideskirts off & wash down, clips do become brittal so worth getting a few spairs just incase & a can of tetrasol underbody waxoil/stonechip red or yellow can & spray sills before refitting plastic if you love your mig take care of it now before we get another shite winter of road killing car killing chemical salt shite distroying our cars...!!!

tetrosol underseal in a yellow can or waxoil in a red car or vise versa calnt rem, is very good or if you can get it wurth do a underseal too but both exspensive about £10/15 a can but cheeper than £250+ per sill etc aresol is better than paint on but can be messy but gets in the hard to reach areas, if you use it on the inside of your doors doit early on a dry day leaving all doors open & interior light off!!
if you close your doors after an hour or 2 & go 4a drive you will get a banging headache from the fumes!!!

just looked on my estate & rear wheel arches are press fitted over each other from inner arch/outer arch, water gets inbetween & rotts it threw a dam good clean up & work some brush on underseal into the edge lip all the dirt collects there & same on front works its way over the arch liner rotting the front wing out by removing archliner & again good clean up & underseal inside of front wing make it last years  :y

your in west midz where abouts???

I can vouch for this, having previously waxoyled a car in a sealed workshop (it was chilly) and ended up on another planet for an hour or two... love the smell in a well ventilated area though!

You might want to take a look in a good marine chandlers. Ships rust like you wouldn't believe in salt-water if untreated so see what they're using. Also, they sometime stick zinc blocks on the chassis so these oxidise before the iron. Essentially this is what galvanisation does. I suspect in the end it'll be cheaper and less hassle just to let the panel rust then replace it when it does though.

During the 70's and 80's I worked in Bodyshops as a Panelbeater/ Sprayer, in those days if was normal for people to bring their cars in for a respray as all cars suffered from rust, mostly we just grinded the rust out as best we could but it ALWAYS returned.

But when people came in for a proper renovation on a Classic car, we always explained the rust HAD to be cut out and new metal welded in.

I perfected a great repair on rustly panels welding in new metal(trying not to get any distortion) and then Leadloading the repair, it was a permanent repair and very satisfying to do.

I would imagine few Bodyshops these days could do these kind of repairs, just imagine asking a young apprentice these days to knock a dent out with his Planishing hammer , Bumping File and Dolly and notice  the bewildered look on his face!

A few back I was after a vauxall vectra which suffers from bad rust in between the side skirt and side panel.

Anyway, I asked the seller if his vectra had any and he told me it did, but he rubbed it down with sand paper and smeared some grease over the affected area. As the side skirt was going to be put back on anyway no one would see the grease.

He said it had been 1.5years since he did that and still no rust has come back.

Is this a likely story? Can grease stop rust?

grease will work if you really want to...?? i use it on all exsposed threads/nut heads when ive done work on cars, i.e track rod ends the thread of the trackrod & the top of the exsposed nut on hub to stop rust re appearing & works well on bare steel, only prob you will have by using grease as an "underseal" is if its already rotten its just going to continue under the edges of the paint unless you can stop the oxidisation?? but if its all good i dont see why it wouldnt work except it will attract all the grit & dust & it wont wash off....
upto you but ide use a good underseal & jetwash it all clean 1st... ???

For underneath and cavity protection I used a product called Rusco
ML grade
ML being the important bit it stands for Methode Laurin and is a cavity wax without silicone
However it dries reasonably hard after a few hours
I simply mild pressure hose under miggy now and again in the winter road treatment season
Then respray any rust/bare areas at the end
It comes in 500ml aerosol form which I use for patching
Also a 1ltr spray can to use with a Shutz gun
Both come at about 6.00 pound each
