Renault auto box
« on: 24 May 2012, 12:22:15 »

Hi all,

I had to put another auto box in my Laguna 1996 2000RT. This was secondhand box and I think it came from a slightly later version than mine.
The problem is, is that it will not always drop to 1st when you stop at a junction. Most of the time, its a slow start away in 2nd. Strangely, after a first startup, when you next stop, sometimes when pressing the pedal to go, nothing happens for a split second, then it engages 1st gear, and leaps away...quite unerving. :(

Can anyone suggest why this is...also, after having another box fitted...does it have to go to Renault to be programmed or whatever.

The autobox ecu is seperate to the box, cant think of anything that would need programming as a result.

Having said that, the Renault auto boxes are VERY poor!

Sticking solenoid possibly, but I'd wonder seriously about valve body wear and loss of hydronic pressure to engage that gear. Is it the same when selecting gear manually? If so, not looking good for that box either. Aisin Warner are they? Load of shite IME sadly.

Trouble is a fix is probably similar money to another box. :-\

Just took it around the estate a couple of times...dropped into first each time I stopped...until last time, I stopped outside home...pulled away..second. Always pulls away in first after being in park. Manual selection uses 1st.
I know its old...but only 120k and excellent condition in and out. I would scrap it, but using it for work as its an estate and I have sold my van.
I don't intend to work after August, so I need it to keep going till then. Do you think the box will last or is it liable to just pack up. Car runs a dream otherwise.

At that age probably not.

Cant say I have seen many issues with the Aisin Warner ones to be honest

Not sure what the Aisin Warner thing is....my box is an AD4 ( I believe used also on early clit's and Megane's).

They then changed to a DPO box, I think about 1998 :y
