Advice needed
« on: 12 July 2012, 18:09:02 »

managed to get these off the car today & was surprised at the condition of the rubbers as they are only 5 months old, fitted at the end of January & covered about 7000 miles. Would you take them back to the supplier & scream blue murder demanding a refund or put up & shut up, they are from a motor factors not VX dealer ( can name & shame if admins give it the ok ).

also have broken 2 ball joint removers from well known tool supplier so decided to buy a heavy duty one in drop forged steel & managed to bend it

top of the ball joint remover should be straight but now resembles a banana so any advice would be most helpful  >:( >:(

After being screwed over by Autovaux, and their "genuine" trackrods, I now only by from a dealer.

Two things; balljoints are held in by a taper, and they benefit from being shocked loose. In theory, it's possible to hit one side of the female part of the joint whilst holding a hammer on  the other side, and the joint will pop apart. In practice, if it's been together for some time then cranking a balljoint-breaker up tight and then hitting the joint will do the job. Just cranking the breaker up really tight usually results in a bent breaker. As you've discovered!

Secondly, www.balljointboots.co.uk is helpful for replacing the boots. Most modern boots are crap and don't last long. Thinking about it, most modern parts are crap.
