Blood sucker alert
« on: 18 July 2012, 23:26:49 »

Just when you think the war on the motorist might be slowing down a bit, up pops the transport minister with a new method of sucking more blood from us. She is proposing that in future any improvements to roads will be on the basis of the road becoming a toll road with the A14, the first for this.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/news/9409162/New-toll-plan-could-see-motorists-pay-for-upgraded-roads.html

Why don't they suck enough blood from us with 65% of the cost of fuel being tax, road tax, MOT tax, Insurance Tax, new car tax, 50% increase in fixed penalty fines, VAT on all car spares etc, etc.  >:( >:( >:( >:(

Still I guess I could catch a train except fares rise every year at inflation + 3%.

So why don't they just take 100% of your income in tax and be done with it. Before you say well nobody would bother working, well Uncle Joe in Russia fixed that by making unemployment illegal, with a one way trip to Siberia if you didn't clock in everyday.  >:( >:( >:( >:(

In terms of likening this to a war, it's really only at the finger pointing stage at the moment - I would imagine there's a lot more of this to come.

they want all of us to buy them smart cars. then when every one has one you will be back at square one again. most of these so called accidents on roads are not down to drivers its down to the roads not being maintained, have you seen some of these new road that have been layed after a couple of weeks they are bumpy, rain water puddles or turns into a mini river. they say you pay for what you get and we pay more for rubbish roads at the cost of a good road.

Is the UKIP party some kind of panacea for all ills? I know they'll get us out of the EU (not!) but do you really think they'll lower taxes as well?

Who owns the rail infrastructure being improved by the inflation +3% rise?  I remember the regulator making BT for example only increase its prices at RPI minus so many %.

I would imagine that if the A14 becomes a toll road, Stansted will see flight numbers drop in relation to other airports.

As someone who lives near and uses the A14 regularly I'm all for it. The plan does include keeping the free road but enforcing use of the toll road for hauliers (predominantly), but I would be likely to go toll too  :y The current A14 is abysmally overcrowded and over used with no scope for further improvement ::) in thit part of the country we don't have the luxury of motorways ;)

Of course, ideally it will be built by the French and they'll forget to give the UK police jurisdiction on it like they did on the M6 Toll initially ::) :D

Of course, it does give an excuse for bashing the government ::)
