Engine whiring V6 2.5

Engine whiring the pitch goes up and down with the revs

Worried that it might be the dreaded Cam belt but others say it could be altenator or Aircon pump

Anybody had experience ...especially of the latter

Any idea how much ... ?

Could it be Water pump?

How much is aircon pump ... can just the bearings be replaced?

First you need to remove the auxillary belt and run the engine briefly without it and see if the noise disappears ,if it does its one of the auxillary pulleys making the noise,tensioner pulley is the usual suspect and the bearings can be re-greased if they aren't too far gone

Funny you should say that I replaced the belt and the tensioner with GM parts 6 months ago as it had seized and wore through the belt until it snapped and it is still spinning so I think I can rule that out ...firstly I would like to rule out the cam belt ... anyone give any assurance on that one?

That will put my mind at rest .....if it is the aircon pump ... can I use a shorter belt and not bother with the aircon... it has no gas and I dont use it anyway

Or could it be the water pump?

You can't rule out the cam belt as easily, but you do need to try it without the aux. belt. Just because the pulley is relatively new it doesn't mean it's not faulty, or that one of the other items driven by that belt is not making the noise.

If that's OK, you need to take off the cam belt cover and check all is well behind that.

As said above if noise goes away with aux belt removed, then unlikely to be cam belt.  Check all pulleys for noise/roughness/play.

In answer to your question re bypassing air con compressor with a shorter aux belt that can be done ok - you want an Omega 2.0 lit with air con belt - just the right size for a V6 without air con  :y

Right ... had all the bits of airways plumbing out and removed the Aux belt ... Hurrah the whining noise stopped

Belted it back up and I think it is the altenator ...pretty sure.

Is it best to buy a new/recon around £150 on Elite ... or bearings change ... if so is that easy and where from .vx don't stock..how much?

Alternator bearing change is pretty straightforward. Details of the bearings are on here if you do a search. ;)

CHaps .... before I attempt the Alternator removal I thought I would check to see if there was a "How Too" on it but staggeringly there isn't ....

1.. can that be right and
2...Is it a tough job ... how long?

+ 1 , re grease the pulley bearings then see if it makes the same noise first before shelling out loadsa monies  :)

Slip the aux. belt off the pulleys,disconnect battery and undo wiring from the rear of altenator,remove the (three iirc) bolts holding the alternator,then lift it out.Refitting is the reverse. A bit fiddly but for a slow old bloke like me,a couple of hours tops.
Hope thats right as its been a while since I removed one,and that was from an engine which was already out of the car ;)
