coolant level warning
« on: 11 August 2012, 20:15:13 »

driving home this afternoon coolant level came up on mfd , i stopped the car and checked but level was ok and temperature was ok . the car is a 2003 omega elite 2.2dti with 217,000 miles on it , i bought it 5 years ago with 34,000 and it has never missed a beat , could it be a faulty sensor or the start of trouble to come, regards mike

If coolant level is ok but your getting a "coolant low" message then its probably a faulty sensor, which is quite common.Might be worth pulling/pushing the sensor up/down a few times in case its just got a bit stuck, but apart from that the header tank will need to be replaced. :y

Pretty common fault, the sensor is fitted to the bottom of the reservoir, and they don't like being disturbed. Either get a replacement from a breaker on here, or go for a new one, apparently about £30 from Vx.

Sounds like the sensor, or could be stuck, is it floating ok, have a poke about.

Worth noting some Garages bodge faulty sensors in the past buy putting a paperclip to short the connector, paperclip rusts off showing a low water warning.

Easy test is to pull sensor wiring  connector out from underside of header tank & link the two connections with a short piece of wire .

Warning should go out . Remove link wire & warning should come on again .

No need to drain coolant  at all      HTH  :y
