Airbag activation question ........
« on: 10 August 2012, 16:55:52 »

I saw an accident today which got me thinking ............

An Audi A4 (55 reg) and a Saab 93 (59 reg) hit each other - very hard on the front O/S. I think the Saab was turning right and to Audi failed to notice him.

I was getting the tyres sorted on Daughters Corsa so was able to watch the "machine" spring into action, with Police, Ambulance, recovery etc ............ It was also interesting in that seconds after it happened there must have been at least 4 or 5 people on mobiles all calling 999.

Both cars front airbags deployed, and hazards came on (well, all except the front O/S ones which were smashed to bits). Being newer vehicles with CANBUS I'm assuming that it's all integrated together.

Would that happen in one of our Omegas? If it was locked would the system tell the car to unlock? I know we dont have CANBUS, but is there a link from the airbag module to the hazards & central locking?

Finally, I've noticed that when braking very very hard some modern cars the hazards come on, do our old Omegas do that as well?

I don't intend to find out - was just curious as to

Most post 2004 cars do indeed have a link from the airbag ECU to the indicators, but was not compulsory until around 2009 (ish) - Not aware of this feature on the Omega Airbag ECU

If you car has the "anti-Hijack" capability on the central locking, ie: you can set to lock the doors just after you start to move, then these will usually unlock in the event of an accident - again, all changed around 2009 (ish) - Other than that - standard locks remain locked

Flashing indicators when braking are a pain in the arse, now compulsory on some EU vehicles, and I`ve heard it is possible to retro fit them to cars with ABS - but please don`t. We already have very nice RED lights to indicate you are stopping.

Yep. Nanny will soon be installing a pair of hands that come out and grab the steering wheel when things get scary. ::)

Alternatively, we could try training drivers properly, I suppose... :-X

Very easy to train people for minimal outlay.

Very big and sharp spike mounted in the middle of the steering wheel.

If you're going to screw up, best do it properly :y

Mercedes did a similar thing when they launched this system on the last S Class, a lot slower mind ::)
