Oil cooler
« on: 25 August 2012, 15:36:33 »

Hello people

Trying to remove oil cooler between the cylinder banks underneath the intakes. The problem is there is not enough clearance to remove it because the oil feed and return pipes.are in the way. How do you remove the pipes from above the oil filter housing as it is very limited access.

Cheers

You need to remove oil filter for access, then undo the two oil cooler pipes where they go into block (on passenger side) - you will need a 19mm crows foot spanner + short extension - access is tight. :y

As dbug says above :)

I was warned not to bend pipes, but lacking the right spanner, I did anyway  :-[. Hence my warning, as its a pig to get back on without leaks if you do bend :)

Thus undo the pipes by the oil filter using a crowsfoot spanner, which will make it free for the pipes to move out of the way at the top.

Recall I fixed it using a small thick extension bar and a hammer  ::)  ;D

To gain better access since i can,t even get the crows coot spanner on the nut, is it possible to remove the whole oil filter housing anx if so does it just unscrew by hand.

To get the oil filter housing off you pop off the cap, withdraw the filter and then remove the large hollow nut that's inside holding the canister housing on (27mm socket or 12mm hex key according to the guide here: http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90579.0)

Thanks eveyone for your help. Have now managed to remove the oil cooler cover and there is a ruddy big crack in it, so large i can fit my finger in it at the front where the pipe fits in. Of to find a new one now.

Could be an opportunity to "convert" to a normal oil filter - the adapter will cost a lot less than a new cover ISTR. I did mine a couple of years back and now use the much cheaper metal cased filters.

No problem with the oil filter casing, just the cover over the cooler. Really suprised at how badly it had corroded, it is a massive crack. :o
