V6 'B' Bolt and dipstick bracket question
« on: 07 September 2012, 21:45:03 »

I changed the thermostat on my 3.2 today but now have confusion over the 'B' bolt and the dipstick bolt.

When I removed the transfer pipe I obviously removed the 'B' bolt but, as the transfer pipe needed replacing, I removed the dipstick bolt and engine lifting plate for better access. I have replaced the 'B' bolt and lifting bracket but now have nothing to bolt the dipstick to, so I assume a little angle bracket fell off as I undone the dipstick. I did hear something drop but couldn't find anything. I will have another look in the morning but could someone please confirm that I have an angle bracket missing. I imagine it dropped down on to the chassis and is hiding on a ledge somewhere.  :-\
I don't have a photo but the dipstick tab sits about 15-20mm lower than the 'B' bolt, as in Photo No.4 in TheBoys guide on thermostat change on DBW engine.

It was not a good day but at least it's easy to get to.  ::) ::)

Off to Vauxhall dealer in the morning to see if they stock said bracket.

Cheers

Now I know why, when I mentioned it at Newent, you said 'good luck' to me Andy.  :y

Got access to the stat in about half an hour but then spent about three hours doing battle with it. To add to the misery I now have a bit of stat casting flying round my waterworks. One of the legs that keeps the actual stat disc in place had snapped off when I finally got it out and with large waterways either side of the stat I had no chance of finding it.  :'(  Hope it doesn't do any damage.   :-\
So to conclude, easy to get at, a complete sod to separate stat but once done easy to put back together.

I'm a fairly patient person but there were nearly tears today.  ::) ;D ;D

Don,t think you really want bits of stat casting loose inside the waterways as could reduce flow rate etc. :(

Unsure what advise though as to how to go on about removing it so best of luck with that :y

My thoughts exactly.  :y

Knowing my luck, it will fly around the system and then jam up my new stat.  ::) ;D  Little hope of finding it so just have to hope it doesn't completely block a small waterway.  :-\

I would be keen to drop the water pump out and try and "eject" this item..  :-\

Due a cambelt very soon, age not mileage, so I will have the pump out then. Not sure if the bit will stay in one place or move about. Bit of a bugger all the same.  :'(
The engine has been running to bleed the coolant through so it could be anywhere now.  :-\

Think positive! The missing leg will probably shatter your pump impeller, then you will know exactly where it is! ;D ;D ;D

Do I gather that you swapped the stat and used the same housing? I replaced the whole housing plus stat, I can't think there was much of a saving swapping the stat only. :y

No. All new bits. I swapped the complete stat and housing and fitted a new transfer pipe.  :y

The old stat leg got broken by twisting it to break it's seal with the transfer pipe as per guide. All of the main holes were plugged with rag but you can't block the stat hole as the stat is in it.
It's been through the water pump already. It's where it is now that concerns me.  :-\

On a side note, if this had happened in a main dealer garage, what's the chances of them fessing up to it. My guess is that they wouldn't even mention it.  ;)

Remove the water pump and see if you can flush it out as that is the lowest point that I would image you could really get it to come out from.

No point doing more damage  :y
