BBC 1 Now. The Town that Never Retired

I can understand the want of people to work beyond 65 but it seems the Government seem to be suggesting 75 + as a future retirement age, how can you be expected to be a builder or similar physically draining work at that age, same opinion for other trades and service industries............. :( :( :(

They don't pay, it's society who pays, but society wants the best of both worlds; high wages, low pension contributions, early retirement, huge pension.

When the nation realises things have got to be paid for out of real money things might get better, and people will understand you can't have the world for a quid. We could of course get Brown back in and just borrow borrow borrow and not think of the consequences.

Lets hope the UK have a bit more sense than to let the financial morons back in charge of our weak finances.

Also, all we ever hear is 'we cant cut that' and we cant do this'.

Nobody ever comes up with the answer to how we fund these things of we dont cut it.

Yep,but people have been led like lemmings into a sense of entitllement. They often dont care where the money comes from "not my problem" seems to be the attitude.Thats why we have a government - to give us the money.People dont seem aware,or to care, that the government doesnt have a penny of its own money. The only money they can ever have is to take it from our wages,or borrow it and then pay it back from our wages (or future generations wages).
Its been one big cruel political con.It started with taxing people more than is neeeded, and then redistribute the money in a fashion which buys peoples votes with their own money. It then moved onto legalised theft - have millions of people on benifits of some kind or another (from family allowance,to working tax credit,to DLA - even for those who really dont need it)and then buy their votes with other peoples money.
We then end up with large numbers of people who dont work, dont see why they should work, and feel perfectly entitled to take more money from taxpayers every month than many of those taxpayers are allowed to retain to keep their own families. >:( >:(
It s a long uphill (and maybe impossible) task to eradicate the socialism which has imbedded itself into the fabric of this country. :(
We need growth in the economy (come on George, get on with it ffs) so that British people are given the opportunity to work hard and  improve their lot in life, and if they dont take the opportunity to do so - no state handouts. We have now reached the position where there is a national outcry by the left wing media when the govt. announces it wants to restrict benefits to being no more than the average wage. How we get from that ludicrous position back to the common sense situation we used to have I really dont know.                                                                                                                                                                  I know of one member of this forum who is very obviously hard working, intelligent and has been very actively seeking work for at least three years, but cant find it.That is the kind of person we need to be helping, not spongers who are happy to sit back and laugh at the fact that they are clever enough to sit on their arse all day while other people get out of bed and earn their living for them. And today we are told that apparently only 12% of people in Scotland contribute to the economy. No wonder Liebore and the Scotnats have a stranglehold on power. They have brainwashed people into believing that they must be reliant on the state for their day to day living.
Im not having a go at the Scots btw,Im sure the picture is similar in other areas of the UK,but afaik figures arent currently available to demonstrate that.

We have oft had this discussion ourselves. No on in our families that reached 65 could have worked(certainly physical work) for many more years and yet they al lived to 80 years or more.

What jobs could older people actually do? Apart from B and Q very few other employers want "old" people. Instead they want funky , vibrant young peple with lots of energy and a "way" with apps (whatever they are!)

So the obvious conclusion is that there won't be any work or benefits paid to people 65 plus but they will live to a ripe old age (medical science will keep their bodies alive) even if they have dementia and so on. So best for young people NOW to start saving via pensions or property investments etc so they have something to tide them over till they get their £100 a week state pension age 75.

Funding cuts? Well the Tories are making a start on cutting benefits. Personally I think there is a very, very long way to go before Britain gets to the lower levels of other European countries. The gulf between Spain and Britain is huge in terms of benefits. Your family has to look after you if you fall on hard times or get pregnant.
A very controversial suggestion would be to limit the number of children people have. It isn't a right. A neighbour in England was "single" and is still having children from unknown fathers after 15 years (to my knowledge). She drives a new car, the council have just revamped the place from top to bottom as it was in a dreadful condition from years of her neglect. Some of her children have themselves got children - again from unknown fathers. Workhouse?

People should be allowed to have as many children as they like. The state should never fund the cost of upbringing of peoples children.Whether its by benefits, automatic right to state funded/subsidised housing, family allowance etc etc. :)
The welfare state needs to be reduced dramatically, but the lefty media and labour/Liberals etc. scream blue murder every time its mentioned.
Savage cuts by heartless rich Tories, looking after their rich friends blah blah blah...... ::)
Imo the welfare state should provide housing, food and heat for people who want to work but are currently unable to find any,or people who cant work due to genuine serious physical infirmty.
Beyond that,if you want it you work for it.
