As you can see from the thread a few posts down, my Omega is getting really shitty fuel mileage and knocking out high emissions.

Today the wife came back from shopping and said the "gears were being weird" so jumped in to see what she was gibbering on about...

1st gear can rev up to 5,000 before shifting to 2nd, even with steady acceleration. When it does shift up it does so in a jerk.

I went to an area near my house were hardly any traffic goes and got it up to 4th and back down and back up and so on. It doesn't happen every time but it's definitely happening.

It's only ever 1st to 2nd (and no, the S button on the stick wasn't on  )

Hmm... rubbish emissions, high fuel consumption, and holding it in gear...

I wonder how effective the thermostat and / or (ECU) coolant temperature sensor is..

It's not dying... the problems are likely related... a good live data check will give a much better indication of what's going on...

Just a thought have yo checked the oil level in the gearbox.

I would be replacing the oil in the gearbox, ime the best start to any aut box problems, as doing this they mostly go away....

Bought a bottle of auto box fluid today and will be doing a full change tomorrow as well as going on the Snap On diagnostic scanner.

No matter how bad the oil is, this won't affect the fuel consumption  (unless the transmission is slipping, in which case it's probably screwed anyway) and definitely won't affect the emissions.

You need to look at all of the live data values first, paying particular attention to the coolant temp, Lambda and Fuel trim values..

I wouldn't do anything other than check fluid level at this stage. A full change is a total waste of money if there are other, more serious issues, which you are yet to determine.

I agree with James cos changing the oil aint as easy as just dropping a plug out on these baby's.
Why not give it a decent service first and check the breather system etc?
There are that many sensors on these that they do need regular services and no missed out bits cos its only asking for trouble later, usually when you need it most too.
Best done soon too before the dreaded winter crap hits the country............
