Have I made a mistake?
« on: 26 April 2008, 16:16:06 »

As I may have mentioned on here before, I've been using Win2k Pro fro some time now. However, I've noticed recently that some new software is now longer supported in Win2K. So, I've decided to upgrade my OS.

I've listened to what people have said about Vista and understand that it's not as popular as XP. Anyway, I decided this week to upgrade to XP and ordered an OEM version from a reputable supplier. It hasn't arrived yet, but I noticed that I inadvertently ordered the 64-bit Pro edition.

A few questions which members may be able to help me on:

1) Will I be able to install the 64-bit OS straight on top of my Win2K?

2) What's the chances of older software working OK?

3) Any pitfalls I should look out for?

I think I may have made an error here, so I would like to know the ins and outs so, if necessary I can return it straightaway.

Personally I would have gone for 32 bit and would always do a 'clean install' with an operating system: on either a (blank) formatted HDD or a newly formatted HDD-partition*
(*slightly more tricky to do depending on your skill level).
Dual booting is also possible so that you`re given an F8 option during boot giving access to each O/S.

I would ALWAYS fully backup all personal data/files/pics. from your previous installation on optical discs or an external-HDD before attempting the new XP install.....Just in case. ;)

The 64 bit version is ok but I believe is more suited to a faster processor/memory speed....64 bit vers. used to mean (some) programme compatability issues but not sure if that`s still the case.

Using the Programme Compatabilty mode in XP should mean older progs. will still run under XP.

Glad you didn`t go for Vista I have both here (XP-Prof. on Desk and Vista+SP1 on Laptop) and would choose to work with XP every time.....Vista just isn`t 'flexible' enough for me; and I have given it a fair-try.  :y

You`ll surely find a visit here very-helpful with regard to XP installation and boot-options:

Thanks, Debs. Ordering the 64-bit version was just a mistake on my part as I meant to order the 32-bit. I do have an Athlon 64 Dual Core processor, but I'm not sure whether I will be getting myself into a whole heap of trouble, especially as my workhorse software is Harvard Chart which apparently will only work under XP in single user mode (whatever that is!).

I can see me sending it back on Monday.  :-[

Yes, that's what I'll do. Wish I'd purchased correctly in the first place.  :-[
