Decorating/DIY Question
« on: 30 October 2012, 11:36:54 »

I'm redoing a bathroom.  Some of the emulsion paint was peeling on the wall and when I scraped it it all came off like wallpaper!  :o  Now the room is back to bare plaster...... Strange as there's no damp or water leaks, I guess it's just the steamy atmosphere of a bathroom...  :-\

Anyway I'm going to tile about half of the room and paint the rest.   I'll give the walls a coat of watery (50:50) emulsion first.  However would I be better tiling onto bare plaster or should I give the whole room a coat first??  ???

Thanks for any wisdom!!  :)

Would guess directly on to plaster. Not a Tiler but never seen them paint a wall before putting tiles on it.

A few coats of diluted PVA adhesive (Unibond or similar) should do the trick! :y

When tiling a bathroom or kitchen straight onto plaster I always use pva glue plus water. mix the water into the pvc until runny enough that you can either brush or roller on. This will seal the wall but also give good adhesive quailty's for the tiles. :y

You need a primer, a good decent undercoat for the top coat to adhere to which will prevent what you have now... flaking paint due to the steamy room. The 50:50 mix won't do much good.

Emulsion straight on to plaster is where the previous decorator went wrong.

You won't need to paint anywhere you're tiling, the grout onto plaster will adhere fine.

^ This also. Although rarely needed.

More of a safeguard tip, to make extra sure.
