H/G failure also uncommon on 2.5 engine.I suspect a garage may be making a nice profit out of you Rog. ;)

*Gulp*   :-[    :-[   :-[    :-[

Oh well . . . . .

I'll look on the up-side and think that things should now be pretty good after being stripped down and put together again. And it has been, I was there today and saw it all laid bare.

Trouble is I use a car for business, I just don't have time for lengthy considerations. I see problem, fix it.
.

Don't beat yourself up about it Rog, if you didn't know you didn't know... simple!  ;) Sounds like you've been very unlucky with your Omegas!  :-\

I'm fairly sure one of the 2.5 V6 migs I looked at buying this year had a leaking head gasket.  A lot of mayo in filler (yes I know that's common) but also a lot of steam (not oil) from the exhaust.  I had my mig parked next to it, identical engine, both well warmed up and no steam from mine.  I didn't bother a long test drive to be certain, a dodgy dealer, spark plugs and sump bathed in oil but worst of all no cruise control meant goodbye.  It was a pre facelift S reg (1999) I think.

As above, don't beat yourself up, you're not on your own.
I have the invoice for my car from when it had its head gaskets replaced at a couple of years old (the car is 1999) and some poor bugger (probably a company) forked out £1400 ...........   :o :o :o

Nah, I'm really not beating myself up.

I look at things this way. Let's say I went out and bought a brand new big estate with a big engine. How much ? Probably at least £20K maybe £30k, £40K even.

As soon as I drive out of the showroom I have lost maybe £5k, and then it carries on loosing. Thats more than any of my Omegas even including an HG repair.

"some poor bugger (probably a company) forked out £1400 .."

That is a very familar amount . . . . . I haven't had the bill yet as work not finished, but I've been warned.

And there are some very good mobile mechanics on here who a) KNOW what they are doing, and b) would charge a lot less than your garage. :y

You certainly do, but not for myself, just look at previous threads. I can think of at least 4 who have done jobs for reasonable rates in the past. :y

Shackeng - Point taken  :)

Now, a question. I may have my car back today (just "may" not for sure).

I need to go to Glasgow, an 800 mile+ round trip tomorrow. Will this be ok, just having had a new head gasket done ? Any Do's or don'ts ?

Oh, if I don't get it back today I'll be taking The Mrs '97 Volvo 940  ;D

Well, all done.

Engine is very much quieter for some reason.
Under bonnet all looking very clean, well cleanER
Car running great but not done a decent run yet. London to Manchester on Monday.
And . . . . there's a serious bill, but pretty much what was quoted (You really DO NOT want to know !   :o ) but it's more than the car cost.

However, if I get 20k - 40k out of it without any more major expense then I'll be happy, although I am gonna need new tyres soon but that would happen regardless.
